  Dragon Savior

“Next in line, Iris.” I dragged my chained feet to the platform, looking at my audience through the noose. “Charges, assassination of Damara Griffin.” The executioner put the noose around my head. Looking in his eyes, I saw no guilt or compassion, nothing but a hard rock. And as he reached for the lever, screaming echoed in my mind. I jolted awake.

Sweat dripped down my forehead and my hands shook in fear. Only a nightmare. I took my arms and wrapped them around my knees and rocked myself. Trying to get the awful thought out of my head, I wondered, how many days I had been in the basement? It seemed 5 weeks, but I knew that the soldiers wouldn’t take that long to confiscate a criminal. As I stopped my rocking I looked around. I never got a chance to really look at what I had been living in for what seemed like forever.

Darkness spread throughout the room. Only when my eyes adjusted could I see the cobwebs that adorned the corners. Trying to look at the positive things, it could have been worse. I was fortunate to have had one of the servants on my side. She would sneak inside the basement with bits of leftovers from dinner. At this point, my only friend. Her name is Annora and she’s one of the maids.

She’s about my age, with beautiful amber eyes and long silky brown hair. Every time she opens that door, she risks getting whipped. She tries to give me all the food she can, even if there just crumbs. At this point it’s better than nothing. I could have been weaker than I already am if wasn’t for her. I was grateful for our friendship and when I get the chance, I’ll repay her with the same kindness she has given to me. Lying on the cold floor, I slowly drifted back to sleep.

“Iris…. Iris darling. Wake up.” A soothing voice said to me. “I want to give this to you. It was given to me from my father and is a great heirloom.” My father handed me a sword with a silver blade collar and guard and a purple handle. Silver thread braided the end of the handle. “It’s beautiful.” I said holding the blade in the sunlight.

“I hope you will never have to use it but it’s good to have just in case.” My father loved, and cared for me throughout my childhood…But a week after giving me the sword, my mother killed him, selling me to a cruel woman. “Get up!” I turned around just before my father disappeared and saw my mother with a whip. “Get up!” she yelled again slashing me with the whip. Trying to get up, my body didn’t move from the floor.

I was stuck. The floor seemed to have swallowed half my body. “Get up!” and just as I saw the whip fly toward me I woke up. My back felt as if daggers had been thrown at it. As my eyes opened, I saw a man with a whip. “Get up.” He said with a flat tone of voice. I struggled to stand on my wobbly legs only to fall down pathetically.

Finally the man came down and put chains on my feet and wrists. “It’s useless trying to get you up. You’re too weak.” The man said. Dragging me up the wooden stairs, and continuing until we were outside, I refused to open my eyes for fear of seeing Annora crying her eyes out. Throwing me into a carriage with metal locks he continued, “You are under arrest for assassination of Damara Griffin. You have the right to remain silent.” Opening my eyes, I looked up to see a strong man with a uniform.

He had brown hair and dark brown eyes. He looked at me with some guilt in his eyes. I could tell he didn’t like his job. “Soldier!” He turned around. “I want you to make sure that this rat has an unpleasant stay at the castle prison.” A cruel and familiar voice said. “I only take orders from the captain or anyone higher than that miss.” He bowed and headed to the front of the carriage to drive the horses.

Looking into the lady’s cruel eyes, I glared right back. “I’m looking forward to your death sentence Iris…Be sure to look for me in the audience.” She turned and left it at that. As the carriage started off, I laid on the wooden floor of it. “It’s going to be okay. It’s going to be okay.” I kept repeating the same sentence in my head until I was interrupted. “Psst! Iris!” Annora running beside the carriage.

“You’re probably going to need this.” She slid my sword through the bars of the carriage. “Thank you, for everything Annora. You have shown me more kindness than I deserve. I plan to repay you for that.” I said in an appreciated tone. “The only thing I ask of you is to promise me something. Promise me that I won’t see you on the noose. Be safe.” She said as she stopped running by the carriage.

I grabbed my sword and tried to hide it. I watched as Annora grew smaller, and smaller, and smaller as we went farther away.

The day went by quicker than I expected. As it turned out, there was more than one soldier in the front. I guessed about four or five. Looking at what the future was ahead of me. It didn’t seem pleasant. The thought of rotting, in a disgusting old rusty cell awaiting to be called for the next to be beheaded or hung didn’t give me much hope. I covered the horrid thought with a pleasant one.

One of me, living a normal life. I would have a fun filled childhood with my father still alive and my mother not being the cruel woman who sold me. I could imagine myself in their arms with my father kissing me on the forehead. And then I imagined growing up with a ton of friends, each one special in their own way. And then watching the sunset with the one I love. But once again, only a fantasy.

There is no way I’m ever going to have a normal life. Then again, maybe it would be better if I could have more of an adventurous life. Traveling, meeting people, that kind of stuff. That would probably be better than having a normal life being that it might get dull after a while. All these thoughts overwhelmed my head. All I thought of were the good times I should have had in my childhood. I woke up from my daydreaming to the sliding of a plate.

“Here. I’m not supposed to feed prisoners but you look terrible. Plus I hate my job. Even though you’re a criminal, I don’t think its right for anyone to starve…” He turned and left. His words were touching until he called me a criminal, ruining the moment. At least I had a full plate of food. While devouring the food, I watched as the sun slowly set.

Stars started to appear as dusk came. Pushing the plate aside, I rested my head on the wood flooring. I could hear all the chuckles, laughs, and jokes from where I was laying. The soldiers had made camp. According to what I eavesdropped, we should be at the castle prison by tomorrow evening if the horses are well rested had there graze. Horses, I thought. I grew up with horses.

They were my friends. I loved taking care of them and ride them, everything about them. But out of all the horses I took care of, one stole my heart. It was a black stallion. His coat was speckled with white dots on his chest. He was beautiful and I felt free as a bird when I rode him. I could ride bareback and he’d be extra careful not to let me fall off of him.

I couldn’t stand the fact that we had to sell him because we were running out of money. I cried my eyes out the day I bade him goodbye. Slowly closing my eyes, I fell asleep. Dreaming about my stay in the prison, I couldn’t help but toss and turn. “Wild animals should be tamed, don’t you think Iris?” A cruel voice said. “They belong in cages. It’s a pity we don’t have one, this prison will have to do.” She said sarcastically.

“Really? I was beginning to wonder why you weren’t in prison yet.” I said in disgust. Sabers started to surround me. Great, an ambush. Trapped by these giant cats, I was helpless. The voice came out of the shadows looking at me with her brutal eyes.

It was Zara. The woman who helped Damara torture me. “You have the same personality as them. Clever, but murderous and will do anything to be free. Extremely hard to tame, but yet not untamable.” She said completely ignoring what I said. Sabers attacked from all sides.

Scratching me and biting me, I couldn’t move or do anything to save myself. I could hear Zara laughing at my pain and agony. I jumped up, hitting my head on the top of the cage. “Ouch!” I said rubbing my forehead. It was morning now. We were going to be on our way soon.

The soldiers started picking up their campsite and packing it away. As it turns out, the horses were well grazed and we would be there by this evening. Great, my nightmare would soon become reality. I sat up and put myself in the corner. It’s going to be a long day.

Chapter 2

“It’s going to be a long trip, your not going to give us any trouble right?” One of the soldiers asked me. “Didn’t think so.” He said as I stayed silent. He had slid a plate of food on into my cage. I waited till he walked away before eating the small scraps. It looked like it was leftover breakfast and being that it was extremely cold, I figured they had woken up early to eat.

The soldiers were almost done packing by the time I was done. All they had to do is saddle the horses. “Stop moving you stupid mule! Hey come help me over here! It’s not letting me put the bridle on!” It’s really terrible how they treated their horses. They really needed someone more experienced.

“Hold his head! Their. Alright let’s get going.” They connected the horse to the carriage, in this case my cage, and started off. “How many times will we be giving the horses a break?” asked one of the men. “About every four hours sounds pretty good.” Said the other. And off we went.

The horses stayed at a trot for the first four hours. Then they gave them water and a ten minute break to rest. Then they went back to a trot. Eventually they started to walk being that it got hotter as we went along. And that’s how it was from five o clock in the morning to one o clock in the afternoon. By that time they gave them a longer break. The hot summer sun was killer in the middle of the day.

Two more stops and we would be there by nine o clock at night. So much for getting there at sunset. At this point, I want to get my execution done and over with. But then I wondered, what exactly does the castle look like? What kind of king rules there? What does he look like? Do you think he would spare the life of a young woman?

Probably not, being that I’m an official criminal. After a half hour of pondering, once again, one of the soldiers gave me a plate of food. Scraps from lunch I presumed. It was cold, and looked like it had accidentally dropped several times. At this point I was grateful for every bite. Thanks to these, somewhat kind soldiers I haven’t starved to death. And probably didn’t look as skeletal as when I first started out. As soon as I finished eating, it was time to go.

The horses started out in a trot again being that they had a longer break than the last time. The trip went on and on. It seemed like forever. We stopped on our third break around five o clock in the evening. The castle was fast approaching. I could now see the huge fortress from only so many miles away.

The thought that my prison cell was only four hours away made my skin crawl with fear. I put my mind past that and tried to think of something else. That made it all the more worse. I started questioning myself about my family. Why would my mother kill my father and then sell me? Didn’t she love me? Did she know this would be my fate? Does she want me dead? What about Zara? Why did she torture me with her cruel games?

Their had to be a reason for all of those questions, but my mind couldn’t come to any conclusion. It can’t be because she felt like making my life miserable. Their had to be a reason behind it. I know that being the kind of woman Zara is, she wouldn’t waste her time on a girl who was completely innocent. Well, I was completely innocent, until now. I woke from my thoughts to the sound and feeling of the horses starting on their trot. Here we go again.

The four hours went by quicker than I expected. Because here we were, at the castle. Terrible thoughts went in and out of my mind. “State your grounds for arrival.” A strong and threatening voice said. “We’ve come from Damara Griffin’s residence with the prisoner who caused her death.” One of the soldiers said with a confident tone.

“Proceed.” Following this, I heard what sounded like a big gate being pushed open and the horses entered. “Alright, you get the horses to the stables, and I’ll get the girl.” One of the soldiers said. “Girl?!” The man who was standing by the gate cried out. “The assassination of Damara Griffin was done by a WOMAN?!” he said even louder than the last time.

“Yes, your point soldier?” the other soldier was about to take me out of the cage until he interrupted. “I expected more of the murderer! I didn’t think that kind of move would ever be made by a woman.” He sighed and continued. “Women will never learn their place in life. I never liked them either.” I bit my tongue trying to hold back any sarcastic remarks I had against this man.

“Thank you soldier but a woman can accomplish just as much as a man could. Please hold back anymore comments you have and go back to your post.” The man huffed and went back to his post as commanded. After unlocking the cage he let me out and put shackles on my feet and on my hands and made sure they were nice and tight.  “What’s this?” He asked pulling my sword out. He gave me a queer look and connected the scabbard to his belt. He led me toward a door which led, obviously down to the dungeon. Right when opening the door, a horrible stench reached my nose and when closing the door, the light fled from my sight.

He walked me down the stairs and down an empty long hallway. I could hear rats and bugs scurry on the floor. Finally we reached another door. When opening it, the worst smell I could ever imagine came through my nose. I coughed and gasped for fresh air, but not able to get it, I gave up. I heard the moaning of other prisoners as we walked through the dungeon. Suddenly the soldier stopped, then he turned and reached for a cell door.

After opening it, he pushed me inside. Taking off my shackles only to put on some chains that were connected to a wall on my hands and feet. I could feel blood rush down my wrists after he put the chains on. “You’ll get used to it after a while.” He turned and closed the door behind him and locked it. He was about to leave when he stopped and looked at me. “Have a nice stay.” Finally he turned and left, dropping the sword’s scabbard and stabbing the actual sword into the ground right by my cell.

“Well this is it, I’m finally here. All I have to do is await my death. I wonder which one is worse? The gallows, or the guillotine?” I said to myself. I knew either one would be a painful death. So it really didn’t matter anymore.

I laid down on a straw bed that was laid out on the cold disgusting floor. At this point this was much better than the basement and the wood floor in the carriage. I took a deep breath of the disgusting air, and fell asleep only to wake up about a half hour later to the sound of the door opening. It couldn’t be time for my execution yet, could it? Maybe they were taking another prisoner. Then I realized that it was another prisoner coming in. I could hear the same gasping that I made when he or she entered the room.

“Get in there!” A raspy voice said as he threw the person into a prison cell. Making sure that the chains were nice and tight, he slammed the prison cell door and locked it. I could hear the crying of the person from the cell as the soldier went out the door. At that point my heart went out to that poor soul. I wondered what could he or she had done to end up here. I shook my head from the thought and lay back down.

I started to think how many days would I stay here. I estimated it would only be a few days before execution. And once again, I fell asleep. This time, when I woke it was to the sound of a man’s voice. “Breakfast! Your going to love today’s breakfast! For some of you, you’re last. Once again, we have cold and old gruel!” The man came around to each of the cells sliding a bowl through the bars.

When it came for my turn he slid the bowl through my bars and just watched me. I tried reaching for it but, unfortunately the chains suspended on my wrists wouldn’t let me go any farther than a foot away from the bowl. He laughed in amusement and said “Oops, guess I didn’t slide it enough. Well, I guess you’re not going to have breakfast this morning! You’ll probably have a better chance at dinner.” He turned and left laughing.

That’s it, I’ve had enough of this place. I started a plan of escape this evil place. But then I asked myself, if I tried to leave, where would I go? All I would be is a wanted criminal with soldiers chasing me constantly. And no doubt, being that Zara wanted me dead, she would also chase me. I would have to live the rest of my life in the shadows. Well, their goes that idea.

“Which one of you is Iris?” A frightening voice called out. I was so caught up with my plans I didn’t even notice the door open. The man walked toward my cell. “Well, well, well. You must have done something pretty bad to deserve what your about to get.” The man unlocked the cell and took the chains off only to replace them with shackles.

When he took me out of the cell, I stealthily retrieved my sword and strapped the scabbard to my thigh. As he walked down to the door, he asked “What will it be? The guillotine, or the gallows?” We walked down the rat infested hallway until we reached the door. He smirked as he opened the door and closed it behind us.

Chapter 3

When we reached the outside the gallows and guillotine came into view. Then, I realized that their wasn’t a single person in sight. Where was everyone? Am I not having a public hanging? Come to think of it, I didn’t see Zara anywhere. In the meantime of my gaping, the soldier walked me past them and into a different door. This time looking at him, his smile was bigger than before.

“Good morning Iris.” A voice called out when the soldier had opened the door. “Please have a seat.” I sat down on quite a comfortable chair in front of the desk. It seems that this liar of a soldier had led me into an office. “Your probably wondering why you’re here.” He paused and then continued.

“You are here to discuss your punishment.” I knew I hadn’t escaped the gallows, it would be to much of a fantasy. “According to my resources, you are accused of the assassination of Damara Griffin. I’d like to hear it from your side of the story.” The man said raising his eyebrow. I glanced at the brown headed soldier. His green eyes shone in delight and you could tell by the smirk on his face he was pleased by his deceit.

I looked back at the man behind the desk. “I killed her.” I said. “I understand that part of the story but I’d like to know why.” Refusing to answer, I just looked down to the floor. “Alright then, according to this letter, sent by Annora Ruiz, you had done this in your own defense.” I looked up immediately when I heard the name Annora. I couldn’t believe that she went through all that trouble just to try and save me from a visit to the gallows.

“Ah, so you know this ‘Annora’ do you?” He said. “I have concluded that since this was in your self defense, you will not be put to death.” What? That’s it? Just because I did it in my self defense? Their has to be a catch. And sure enough… “But, you will have to spend the rest of your life working for the king.”

I knew it. Taking the deep breath I asked “What exactly will I be doing?” Then he answered back. “You will be working as the stable master here at the castle. It will come with your own room at the castle.” He said to me gesturing for the soldier to come forward. “And you expect me to stay here with out any trouble?” I asked sarcastically. “What other choice do you have? Run away and be a wanted criminal?”

Unfortunately the man had a point. Where else would I go? I’d have to stay here. “That’s what I thought. Soldier, please show Miss Iris to her suite please. And take off the shackles, they are not needed.” Rubbing my wrists with relief, we walked out of the office. And as soon as the door was closed, the soldier busted out laughing. Just watching he finally said something.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I couldn’t help it! The look on your face when I asked you ‘the guillotine or the gallows’ was rich!” then he started laughing again as we walked down to another door. Opening the door, we walked down a huge hallway, with royal blue carpeting that went all the way down. The tapestries were also the same blue but it was embroidered with gold thread. “The names Blade.” He finally said.

“It’s okay your not alone, I mess with all the prisoners in some way.” “And that’s supposed to make me feel better right?” I mumbled to myself. Reaching the end of the long hallway, we took a left to a flight of stairs. Climbing up, I decided to speak up. “So that’s your job. You go and mess with the prisoners who are already horrified and are afraid their going to die?”

“Actually I was just filling in. I’m a real soldier who has fought in battles and other stuff.” He said proudly. “Alright, here you are. You’re right next to the King’s Adviser’s suite. He’ll actually be giving you instructions tomorrow. Here’s a map to the castle. I suggest you stop by the seamstress before tomorrow for some clothes.”

Then he sniffed the air and made a repulsive look on his face. “And on your way you might want to stop by the baths. No offense but you stink worse than horse manure!” He laughed as he walked down the hallway. “Oh wait! You’re going to need this.” He said throwing me a key.

“You can lock or unlock your suite whenever you please. See ya around.” “Wait!” I yelled. “Why exactly will the King’s Adviser be teaching me? Isn’t he supposed to be doing something more important…like being the Kings Adviser?”

“Well he should be, but he knows more about horses than anyone in the entire kingdom. By the way, you’re going to have to wake up before sunrise everyday alright? See ya.” When I unlocked my… Wait a minute. I have a suite? I can’t believe this! I went from a basement, to a carriage, to a prison cell, to this?! I can’t believe they just let me off the hook like that!

Well, I can’t complain. I actually get to live and avoid the guillotine. I’m actually going to have a chance of a normal life! I couldn’t take all of this in at one time. I finally decided to open the locked door. When I walked in, I saw something that looked like some type of library.

There were bookshelves filled with books. There was a wooden desk along with a chair. And the most comfortable blue satin couch. I realized that the floor I was walking on was a beautiful marble.

Looking to the left of what seemed to be a living room, there was a door. Walking into the door, a splendid bed was made, with blue covers and gold pillows. My own bedroom. For most of my life I had been sleeping on a hay bed infested with fleas. I couldn’t get too comfortable yet. I remembered that I would live here for the rest of my life, probably without pay, and working hard with horses.

Well, there’s a positive right there. At least I’ll be with probably my only friends. I looked at the map that Blade had handed me. Looking for seamstress, I found it on the third floor. I headed out following all the directions to try and get some clothes before heading to the baths. I passed by maids, soldiers, and what looked like someone who worked in the kitchen.

All of which stared at me in question. Some even coughed when passing my awful odor. Finally, I reached my destination. “Hello?” I asked opening the door. “Come in, come in.” A voice called out. By the sounds of it, it was a woman. “You must be the new stable master correct?” She asked. “Yes, I was hoping to find some-“

“You are going to need clothes of course! Hmm…I have just the dress. You seem like someone who would like this. Oh and that!” By the time she was done taking out dresses, she had a whole pile for me. “Is it possible to have some boots for riding horses?” I asked discreetly. “Of course! I have just the size for you! By the way, my name is Elena. I’ve been so wrapped up in clothes; I guess I didn’t give you a proper introduction of myself. And you are?”

She asked me. “My name is Iris.” I replied. “Iris! What a wonderful name! Alright, here we are.” She took the enormous pile of clothes and boots and put them in my arms. “Thanks.” I said struggling to keep things from falling. “No problem! Come back anytime!” she closed the door behind me so I wouldn’t accidentally drop anything.

I headed toward my room so I could drop off everything and take a bath. When I opened the door to my room, I dropped everything on the couch. Turning around, I noticed something on my desk. “How peculiar. I don’t remember putting anything on my desk.” I said to myself.

Reading the note in quite nice handwriting, it said

“Arrive at the stables tomorrow at seven o’ clock sharp. Don’t be late.

Signed,

King’s Adviser.”

Great, the King’s adviser knew how to get into my room. Didn’t Blade say that no one could get into my room without the key? I could have sworn he did. Probably another white lie. Sighing, I grabbed one of the dresses that Elena had given me. It was blue, with gold edging, going down to the floor. It had a tight top with a gold band around the waist and from the bottom of the band, it was loose.

The sleeves were long and draped down to my knees. Taking the dress, I headed out toward the bathes. Walking down, all I thought about was going to the stables. Who exactly would I be looking for? I have no idea what the man or even woman looked like.

Maybe I could address the person by their clothes. Being the king’s adviser they have got to have nicer clothes than most of the people in the castle. “Here we are.” Opening the doors to the baths, I saw the most wonderful thing I have seen in a long time.

Chapter 4

Soap! The lovely object of which I can possess great hygiene! As soon as the door closed, I threw my clothes off and practically did a cannon ball. “Ahhhh….” The water was so hot that steam overflowed the room. Taking soap, I washed and scrubbed till my skin was raw and until the soap bar was completely depleted. “Hmmm… I wonder if there’s a… brush!” I said grabbing the brush and attempting to get the clumps and knots out of my hair.

It felt like forever till my hair was finally silky smooth. “I suppose I should get out…” I said to myself. But really, I didn’t want to leave. This was the first time in a long time that I had a bath and I had to leave. I sighed, and got out. I grabbed a white towel and started drying myself.

I grabbed the dress that Elena gave me and put it on. Taking the map out of my pocket, I looked to find a kitchen. “Found it.” It was on the first floor, on the other side of the castle. I started on my way with my stomach yelling at me until I got there. I looked at the door, the word “Kitchen.” were in scripted on the double doors.

“Here we go.” And just as I was going to open the door, “Ouch!” I yelled out as the double doors hit my forehead. “Oh, my apologies Miss!” A tall round man said to me. “It’s quite alright Sir.” I replied. “Call me Richard. I’m the chef here at the castle. And you are?” he asked.

“I’m the new stable master. The names Iris.” I replied. “Well Miss Iris, the least I can do is give you something to eat for my incident.” He said to me grabbing my hand and leading me into the kitchen. “Here, I have fresh baked bread and churned butter. Help yourself.” He gave me a whole loaf and a stick of butter along with a knife.

I sliced three slices of bread and smothered them with butter. Gobbling them up, he offered me some jelly to put on my next slice. “So what brings you here Iris?” he asked in a sweet tone. “I’d rather not talk about it really.” I replied in a subtle way. “Ah, prisoner right? Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. I was once a prisoner to you know. I was put in the prison for poisoning the King’s Adviser’s food.”

I raised my eye brow at him, he gave me a hearty laugh and then said “Don’t worry, I’m not making that mistake again. I was almost put to death for that one. If it wasn’t for the king, who gave me a second chance.” I let out a sigh of relief and finished eating. “I should probably get going.

Thanks a lot Richard, the food was fantastic.” I said waving goodbye and headed toward my room. It was already sunset and I needed all the rest I could get being that I had to wake up before sunrise. And then I had to be at the stables seven o’ clock sharp. Here we are, my suite. I took a moment to look around the hallway. I had just noticed that their were several doors.

Which one would be the advisers? Blade said I was right next to his suite, but there are a bunch of doors around me. Shaking my head “Forget about it.” I said to myself. I opened the door. As soon as I saw the pile of clothes still on the couch, I remembered that I should probably put them away. I swooped the pile up into my arms and carried them into my bedroom.

Looking around for another door, I found one to my right side. Inside the dark tiny room, was things to put my clothes in. I hung up all of my clothes except for my night clothing. I took off the dress I was wearing now, and got into the comfortable, silk, simple nightgown. The gown went down and touched my toes, along with a warm elegant sweater. My slippers almost looked like ballerina shoes and had silk on the outside, but fuzzy and warm in the inside.

Every step I took walking towards my bed, was like walking on clouds. Lighting the lamp right next to my bedside, I pulled the covers down, and took off the satin pillows, only leaving two. Taking off my slippers, I sat on my bed, and slipped my feet into the clean, warm sheets and lay my head on the pillows. Closing my eyes, I fell half asleep. I thought of what my day was going to be like tomorrow. And about how I had escaped the dreadful, rat infested prison.

I thought about how Blade messed with me. And then suddenly, it hit me! Blade? My sword! I remember taking it with me out of the prison, but after that, nothing! I must have left it in the baths! I got to get it back before anyone discovers it, if they hadn’t already discovered it. In the middle of my thoughts, I jolted up to the sound of a door slamming.

It must have been the door to the hallway because the door to my bedroom hadn’t moved. I quickly and quietly put my slippers on and moved towards the bedroom door. Without making a sound, I opened the door and peeked out the crack. From my view, I didn’t see anything, or anyone, all until my sight reached the door to the hallway. There, right by the door was my sword laying on the marble floor.

I opened the door wider this time, and made sure their wasn’t anyone around. Carefully walking towards the sword, I saw that no one was here. Swooping the sword up, their was a note attached.

It said, “Not very wise to leave a weapon behind. A dilemma could form because of this. The maid from the baths didn’t distinguish what to do with it when she found it, and so she gave it to me to handle the situation. She also gave me extra information that a young lady had left the baths just before she went in to sanitize it.”

Hmm… This handwriting is familiar, I wonder who it is.

“Being that you’re new here and you have probably been through a coarse time, I assumed it was yours. Don’t let an occurrence happen like this once more being that you can be hanged because of carrying a weapon without higher authority’s permission. In addition, people can get the wrong impression of you, and so far mine isn’t exceedingly superior. Hopefully tomorrow we can overlook this and start over with a clean slate.

Signed,

Kings Adviser”

I knew it! It’s the exact handwriting as the King’s Adviser’s from the last time he left me a note, and so far the only one who has ever busted into my suite. Oh well, I yawned as I went back to my bedroom and closed the door behind me. I put my sword in my closet and took off my slippers. Jumping in bed, I went off to dreamland.

“The King is a fool for letting you live!” a memorable voice screamed. “You deserve to die! You murdered her! You’re a criminal!” She kept screaming. “I will get revenge! You will never have a moment of peace until you’re gone!”

Zara jumped at me pinning me to the ground. Her murderous eyes shone blood red with anger. She pulled a dagger with her right hand out of the scabbard. “I will have revenge on you if it is the last thing I do.” She raised the dagger into the air and then the dream went black. I felt something peirce my chest and touch my heart, but didn't cut it. I assumed it was Zara's dagger but it didn't hurt as much as it should have. Even though it didn't hurt, I coudn't help but clutch my chest. Gasping and coughing, I sank down into the floor.

The last thing I saw was Zara's stained dagger until I fell into an abyss of darkness. Looking at my chest, there was no hole in it. “I thought you said that I wouldn’t have to see you like this!” A whining voice came out behind me. When I turned around, I saw Annora, with teary sad eyes. “How could you do this to me?!” tears welled out and she turned and ran.

“Annora! Wait!” I cried out and ran after her. No matter how hard I tried, she didn’t answer, or even hear me. I found myself runing right into the place where terrible memories flowed. It was the house of Damara Griffin. I walked inside the giant house and followed the sound of screeches and screams.

It led me right into the basement. When I opened the door, I saw Zara whipping Annora on her back. “So you’re the one who let Iris live! You sent the letter!” I ran after Zara to try to stop this madness. But as hard as I tried, there was a force that kept me from knocking her down.

All I could do was stand, and watch Annora suffer. I couldn’t go back, and I couldn’t go forward. Pretty soon I couldn’t even yell at Zara telling her to stop. I couldn’t move, speak, and soon I couldn’t hear, or see. Jolting up, I woke up from the awful nightmare. Sweat dripped from my forehead. Taking a deep breath, I looked out my bedroom window.

It was still dark outside but I could see stars disappearing and sunlight come up from behind the mountains. It’s Time to get ready for my first day of work.

Chapter 5

Let’s get a move on. The last thing I want to do is be late for work on my first day. I walked out to my living room and looked for a clock. Is there a clock? I don’t see one anywhere. Then I remembered that there was a grandfather clock at the end of the hallway. I unlocked my door and looked out to the grandfather clock.

It was exactly 6:10. I had only fifty minutes to get to the stables! I rushed back into my room and got my clothes ready for a bath. Going out of my room, I was happy to see that I wasn’t the only one dressed in their night clothing. Almost all the maids and servants were wearing their night clothes. And everyone was scattered about trying to get their way to the bathes.

Avoiding traffic, I made my way to the bathes through the quickest route. This time when I opened the door I heard many women chatting and gossiping along with splashing and laughing. When I opened the door completely, everyone froze. There was no longer anyone laughing, no one splashing, no one gossiping. Ignoring the silence, I put my clothes on a counter and started to get unchanged.

Suddenly, everyone started finding excuses to get out. And they all got changed and left. Leaving me all alone. I’d probably enjoy the peace more if I hadn’t known that they left because of me. Well, can’t change the past. Might as well enjoy the warm water. Going in the water, I quickly found a bar of soap and started to wash. I couldn’t waste any time being that I had less than an hour to get to the stables.

Brushing my long black hair, I thought about the Adviser. How would I recognize him? How do I even know that he isn’t a she? Oh well, I’ll probably recognize the person by their clothes. Being in pretty high authority, he should have better clothing than the rest of us. I better get out before I end up being late.

Rushing out of the water, I threw my clothes on and started to walk to the kitchen for some breakfast. Finally, I reached my destination and was greeted with the smell of bacon and eggs. “Good morning Iris!” the jolly man said. “Good morning Richard.” I replied. “You must be hungry! Please, sit down and eat. Your just in time for my famous bacon and eggs! The bacon has been seasoned to perfection and there’s no doubt that my eggs have been cooked just right!” He assured me.

“Thanks Richard, but I’m kind of in a hurry, can we make it to go?” I asked politely. “No problem! First day of work right? Here, I packed a fork and a glass of fresh milk straight from the cow. Careful not to spill!” “Thanks a lot Rich!” I said pushing the door open. When I went out to the huge hallway, I looked at my map to navigate where the stables were.

“Aha.” I said to myself. It was in the back of the castle. Starting my way, I went to the far end of the castle and came up to a door. Right next to the door was a clock that said “6:59”. “I hope this door leads to the stables.” I said aloud. Opening the door, I was relieved to see horses, a corral, and stables.

Yes! And just in time! But, looking around, I didn’t see anyone who might be waiting for someone, nor did I see anyone who might be the adviser. Where was he? Or she. Sighing, I walked toward a stool and sat until I saw a sign of the adviser. Looking around, I looked at the horses, and then looked at the field for grazing, and then my eyes met the corral.

There, there was a beautiful pure white horse galloping around the corral. I watched the mare’s legs as they seemed to blur in motion. Walking towards the corral, I stopped at the wooden fence. Then, I saw the rider. His red hair shone in the early morning sun. And his blue tourmaline eyes were screaming out “freedom”.

His ocean blue clothing made it seem like he was in higher authority. Could this be the Adviser? There’s only one way to find out. As soon as he’s done riding I’ll have to ask him. Together, horse and rider became one huge blur of blue and white. They kept going faster, and faster, and faster until the horse was to tired to go on. “Alright, that’s enough this morning girl.” He said to the horse.

Soldiers from the sideline started to clap at the outstanding performance. He got off the horse and started walking her back to the stables. “Excuse me sir!” I called out. “Hmm? Yes Miss, can I help you?” he asked me. “Do you happen to be the King’s Adviser?” I asked. “No, I’m afraid not. You’ll have to excuse me, I must return my horse.” He said and started off again.

“Wait, do you know where he might be?” I said walking beside him. “Hmm… It depends, who exactly are you?” he asked. “I’m sorry, where are my manners? My name is Iris. I’m the new stables master.” I replied curtsying. “I’m sorry, where are my manners? It’s always the gentleman’s duty to bow when meeting a lady.” He charmingly said bowing.

“My name is Derron. I’m captain of the soldiers here. The adviser told me to give you a message that he would be a little bit late.” He said. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Derron. Thank you for the message.” I replied. “The pleasure is all mine Miss. I’m sorry but I need to get back to my troops now. It’s just about time for training. I’ll see you around.” He bowed again and left.

“Excuse me Madame.” A man called from behind. “You are the new Stable’s Master correct?” he asked me as I turned around. It was a man in fancy dark blue clothes and was wearing black boots and a midnight blue cape. His hair was blonde and he had very dark grey eyes.

“Yes I am.” I said curtsying, “Excellent. I am the King’s Adviser and will be instructing you for your new job.” He said and continued. “And you are?” he asked. “My name is Iris. May I call you by your name?” I asked kindly. “Yes indeed you may. My name is John. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I apologize for being tardy, something came up and the King needed my assistance. Let’s get started right away. First I would like to know if you have any experience with horses.” He asked.

“Yes, I used to take care of horses. I know how to ride bareback, and with any saddle. I also know how to feed, water, and groom a horse.” I replied. “Then the only thing I really need to do is inform you of when to do things and with what horse. I have brought you a paper with all the time dates of when to do things with each horse.

It is a daily schedule.” He handed me a piece of paper with a number of times and events. I noticed it was the same handwriting on the notes that I had gotten. The events went from seven in the morning, to six in the evening. “Because you are the new stable’s master, you will get your own horse of your choice. You may hang the paper anywhere you like. I’d also like to inform you that all the tools you need are in that shed right there. From brushes, to water pales, to rakes for the manure.”

Oh great, I forgot about that part. That’s the only thing I hated about taking care of horses. “Which of the horses may I choose to be mine?” I asked. “You may choose only the ones on this side of the stables, the rest are owned.” He pointed the right side of the stables. “Choose wisely, you can only select one once.” He said to me.

“And before I forget, you must also change the hay and clean out the stables once a week.” He said as I walked down to each of the horses. “You must excuse me but I need to attend to some paperwork. Make sure you start on the schedule at once. I will see you at supper around 6:30 in the kitchen. I will not be having dinner with the King this time, but I’d like to hear about your first day. I will see you later then.” He bowed and walked away.

Alright, I have a long day ahead of me, and I’m already late for starters. I’ll have to choose my horse tomorrow I have too much to do. First on the list, the horses need feed, hay, and water. I’m guessing the feed and hay are in the shed. Grabbing two feed buckets at a time, I went up to the shed to fill them.

There were twenty horses in all so I had to make ten trips. Being that I was used to doing this it only took a short time. Then I filled all the stalls with hay and filled their troughs with water. All of the horses were extremely beautiful. I could tell all of them were pure bred. But one of them caught my eye. It was a magnificent dark chestnut filly with a white stripe going down her face. The best part was that she was one of the horses that John said I could have!

Out of all the horses she was my favorite. But we’ll see whether or not she’ll like me. I slowly walked up to her stall with a carrot in my right hand. “Hey girl.” I said comfortingly so as not to pose as a threat. Feeding her the carrot I rubbed her face. “I can’t spend too much time with you. I got to take care of the other horses to.” The horse nodded her head as if she understood and I went to bring in the other horses field.

Two by two I rounded them up and each one was brushed before going back in their stall. Then I took the ones who haven’t been out to the field for their grazing. After doing that I washed the horse that needed a grooming. By the time I did all of that, it was five o clock. In an hour and fifteen, it would be time to quit for the day.

For the rest of that time, I cleaned out one of the stalls so I wouldn’t have to do that much cleaning when it was time for the weekly stall clear out. When I was done, it was exactly six o clock. For the last fifteen minutes, I rounded up the horses from the field and put them in their stalls. Some of the soldiers and other people had taken some of the horses earlier today but brought them back right before I was going to turn in.

I guess they knew that’s when all horses needed to be returned. Wiping sweat from my forehead, I started my way to my room to pick up my clothes so I could take a bath. First day and I’m exhausted and beyond sore. Every step I took my feet hurt. Blisters had formed on them and it was killing me from all the standing and walking I’ve been doing all day. Thank goodness I had a lunch break in between otherwise I would have collapsed!

“First day is always the hardest.” I said to myself. I’ll get used to the routine eventually. Almost to the bathes, I made a left turn. To my surprise, I ran into someone. “Hey, be careful! Almost ran into- Oh! Iris!” he said in surprise. “Hey Blade, sorry for almost running into you. I’m kinda in a rush. I have fifteen minutes to get a bath and then to the kitchen.” I apologized. “No prob. So how’d the first day go?” he asked.

“I’d love to talk and all but I really gotta get a move on. I’ll talk to you at dinner in the kitchen if you want. The Adviser would like to know the same thing.” I said fast walking towards my room. “I’ll be there!” He yelled out. When I reached my room, I quickly grabbed a dress from my closet and locked my suite door. Gazing at the clock, I had five minutes to get to the kitchen.

“I’m going to be late.” I said to myself running to the bathes and finally I got there. And once again, when I entered, everyone else left. Throwing off my clothes into the dirty basket, I jumped into the hot water pool. It took me five minutes to get all the dirt off me and then another six to put my hair into a quick braid, and throw my clean dress on.

After I was done, I ran to kitchen which took me an extra five minutes. “Here we are.” I said panting from all the running I did. Opening the double doors, the first thing I heard was “You’re late.”

Chapter 6

“Oh come on John! She’s only fifteen minutes late! Give her a break, it’s her first day. If I do believe, you were also late this morning for her first day. That’s probably the reason she’s late!” Blade defended. “You’d do well to hold your tongue soldier. First day or not, she had better get used to being on time all the time.” He said in serious tone. Blade sighed and said “Yes sir.”

We all made small talk and I told them how I was thinking about picking the young filly as my horse. Some how, our conversation all led to Zara, my least favorite subject. But I did have a few questions about her, and now was my chance to get some answers. “Can I ask, what exactly is Zara’s relationship with the King?”

Right after the question, everyone paused. Blade was just about to take another bite of food, Richard stopped kneading dough, and the Adviser just sat there with a serious yet somewhat surprised look on his face. Then the Adviser spoke up. “We will talk about this later. Tomorrow before breakfast sounds promising. Excuse me; I have some things to attend to.” He got out of his chair and left the kitchen. “Well that was interesting.” Blade broke the silence.

“What did I do? Why was everyone so surprised when I asked that question?” I asked Blade. “No one in the castle is supposed to talk about Zara. I’m not exactly sure why but I’m not worried about it.” Blade said and finished up his food. “Are you going to finish that?” he asked with his mouth still stuffed from finishing up his food.

“No, go ahead. I’m going to get some sleep anyway.” I said pushing my plate and getting up. “You’re going to bed at seven o’ clock? Oh come on! Let me at least introduce you to some of my friends around the castle!” he said getting up. I sighed and gave in to his offer. “Alright, how many friends do you have?” I asked.

“Lost count at fifty. Just kidding!” Blade said and then laughed. And so we started our way. “I know one of my friends is always at the east corridor of the castle. I’m not sure why he always hangs out there but he’s like my best friend!” Blade said as we walked down a long hallway.

Taking a left, Blade called out to a young man. “Hey Matthew! How’s it going?” The man approached. “Hey Blade! What’s up!” The gentleman said with a big smile. He had sweet grey eyes and golden blonde hair. He wore a blue uniform with gold outlining and white pants with a black belt. “And who might this young lady be?” The man asked. “This is Iris. Iris, this is Matthew, my best friend!” Blade said. “Pleased to meet you Matthew.” I curtsied and then he bowed.

“The pleasure is all mine.” He said with a warm smile on his face. “I was just showing her around the castle. I told her I was going to show her all my friends!” Blade said. “What friends? Sorry Blade but face it, I’m the only one willing to put up with you.” Matthew joked.

“Ha! But that is where you are wrong! Of course we have the last amigo of our group!” Blade said. “That’s another language for friend Iris. Let me tell you, the more people you know, the less lonely you’ll become.” He said.

“That’s right! Matthew learned that the hard way. He didn’t have any friends! All he had was his big brother who didn’t even pay attention to him and focused on was making his way to higher authority. And so he made it without any friends or family. Well, except you Matthew. Sad story really…” Blade said. “You didn’t have to tell her my whole life story as if it was a depressing story book!” Matthew grimaced. I couldn’t blame Matthew though.

I had just met him and now I knew part of his life story when in reality it wasn’t any of my business. Even though that was true, now I wanted to know something. Who was his brother? I held back the urge to ask the question. I knew it wouldn’t be appropriate to ask something like that if I had just met him. I’ll ask when I get to know him a little bit better.

“Anyways, we’ll show you our last amigo. We are the only two people in the castle who can put up with Blade. And even still, we do have some trouble.” Matthew looked at Blade with a grin. “You know you can’t help but put up with me!” Blade smiled right back. This time we headed outside the castle toward two soldiers dueling. Behind them was a man standing and watching them. Every once in a while the man would tell them to stop and adjust whatever they were doing wrong.

When we approached the man I noticed that he looked familiar. “Hey Derron! What’s up!” Matthew and Blade both said. “Hey fellas, sorry I can’t talk right now. I’m a bit busy.” he said. “We just wanted to introduce you to someone. She’s new at the castle and we want to make sure that she makes a lot of friends!” Matthew said. Then Derron turned his attention from the soldiers to me.

“Oh yes, we’ve met before. Miss Iris I’m glad to see that you are making friends.” He bowed. “You’ve met?” Matthew and Blade said in unison. “Yeah, I met him at the stables.” I answered. “Oh, okay. Anyways, whatcha up to Derron?” Matthew asked. “Two soldiers asked me to help them with their fighting skills.

They’ve got a lot of work ahead of them. But I’m just about ready to call it quits for today.” He said and then went up to the soldiers. He gestured for them to stop and they headed out as Derron walked back towards us.

“You up for our daily duel Derron? Ha! All D’s!” Blade laughed. “As always!” Derron said pulling out his sword from his scabbard. Blade went over to a shed that held weapons and grabbed a spear that was as tall as him and approached Derron. Matthew and I grabbed some chairs to watch the match. “Ready to lose Derron?” Blade taunted.

“Have you ever won a match against me?” Derron mocked back. They started walking in circles not taking their eye off each other. Then Blade launched an attack running toward Derron full speed and jabbed his spear at him. Derron took two steps to the right and Blade missed. Taking advantage of the miss, Derron aimed for his arm but clashed into Blade’s spear. Both kept trying to get past each other’s blades but kept clashing.

Blade jumped back from exhaustion and launched another attack. This time he barely missed him which took Derron by surprise. Derron sliced his sword through the air right where Blade’s head was, except Blade ducked and avoided by a hair. Both duelers were getting tired but didn’t give up. Getting anxious, Blade rammed Derron with his shoulder and knocked him to the floor.

Derron knowing he’d get impatient did a sweep drop and had Blade fall onto the floor. Putting his foot on his chest he pointed his sword at his neck. “Gotcha.” He said panting and wiped sweat off of his forehead. “Why do I always fall for the sweep drop.” Blade said panting and pushed Derron’s foot off his chest.

“You get impatient to easily. Derron uses your exhaustion and anxiousness to his own advantage. Let’s just say it’s your weakness.” Matthew said. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” Blade said waving off Matthew’s comment. “Hey, what about you Iris? I’d sure like to see your fighting skills! I know you can!” Blade asked me.

“I guess.” I contemplated on whether or not I would want to do a duel. It would be good practice to keep my strength and agility up and running. I decided to agree. “Great! Go ahead and grab your weapon in that shed over there.”

Derron pointed to the cabinet where Blade got his weapon and then went over to grab a skin bottle of water. When I opened the tall and wide cabinet, I saw a variety of weapons. From scimitars to swords and spears this shed had it all.

I went over to the swords and grabbed the nearest one. It had a golden handle with a long shining blade that was light as a feather. Very easy to use. I attached the scabbard to my waist and headed out. I came to the empty field where Derron waited. “I’ll go easy on you.” Derron said with a smirk on his face.

“I don’t take pity from others. Especially in a duel, give it all you’ve got.” I taunted. “Ooh!” Blade loudly said from the sidelines. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Derron said and ran toward me. Ducking from his sword a quickly went behind him and attempted to slice my sword on his back, but he ran forward and turned quickly around. “Pretty good.” He complimented.

Then I ran toward him full speed knowing that he would step to the right to avoid me. Just as he made that move my sword went to the right just enough to cut into his sleeve and leave him a scratch. “Whoa! Iris actually cut Derron! Derron has never been touched by a sword!” Matthew said to Blade.

Derron was just as surprised as the others and I used that to my advantage and knocked him down with my shoulder. Just when I thought I won, he did a sweep drop on me. Somehow I knew it wasn’t going to be that easy. My father always told me to never underestimate your opponent.

I guess I took that advice to lightly. But just as he wasn’t giving up, I wasn’t about to lose either. I quickly got up before Derron could pin me. He was about to slice my back when I turned around and blocked the attack with my sword. Both swords kept clashing together as we fought each other until we pushed on each others swords.

Sweat dripped from his forehead, and determination filled his eyes. I could tell this was going to be a long match. After a long push against the swords I backed up and circled him. I had to find a way to find his weak point. Fighting is always about strategy like my father said. Finally, I realized something.

The only reason I got that arm was because that was his weak spot. Now that I had my goal, its time to make my move. Making quick steps, I charged at him. I didn’t aim for his arm till the last minute. Then he realized what I was going for but it was to late. He made the wrong dodge move and ducked and that’s when I put my sword into the sleeve of his weak arm and pushed it into the ground.

He was pinned, or so I thought. Just when I thought he was going to give up, he once again did his famous move, the sweep drop and ripped his sleeve off the sword. Grabbing my sword behind him I was too tired to go on.

This match has gone on for long enough. “I give up.” Derron and I said simultaneously. It surprised him just as much as it surprised me. “It seemed like you were able to keep going for a lot longer!” Derron said. “Same with you.” I agreed and we both walked toward some seats in exhaustion. Then suddenly, heard clapping behind me. “Well done Iris.”

Chapter 7

Immediately I stopped in my tracks. Slowly turning around, I wasn’t surprised at who I saw. “Your combating skills were quite remarkable. I’ve never seen such fighting techniques before.” John complimented. “Yeah! You go girl!” Blade yelled from behind. Derron continued walking till he reached his friends. “Thank you.” I said. “I didn’t just come out here to say hello. You have a scheduled meeting with the king tomorrow after work.” John said.

“Why do I have a ‘meeting’?” I asked. “The king likes to meet all of his employees at least once. You will meet him over dinner. Please wear your best clothing. I will also be attending.” John said. “Alright. I gotta go guys, it’s already dark. See ya tomorrow.” I said and started my way toward the castle.

“Wait! Don’t you want to hang out a little while more?” Blade called out. “I can’t, I got to get some sleep for tomorrow. Remember, I have to wake up before sunrise!” I yelled and then continued. I was past exhaustion at this point. Slowly, I made my way my room to pick up my night gown and slippers.

After doing so I went to get a nice, hot, relaxing bath. The second one in a single day! When I reached the bathes, I threw off my clothes and stepped into the hot water. I just loved the feeling of hot water crawling up my body as I slowly walked into the giant pool of water. All of my muscles loosened immediately after my whole body went underwater.

Letting my hair out, I washed and brushed it till it was smooth and silky. And for about ten minutes, I just relaxed and enjoyed the water. After I finished, I got dressed and headed for bed. The hot bath just made me more weary than I already was. When I reached the hallway to my room, I noticed a man opening the door right across mine. “Huh?” The man noticed my presence.

“Oh! Iris! I didn’t know your suite was right across mine!” Derron said. “Yeah, me either.” I replied. “Well, you get a good nights rest alright? See ya in the morning!” He said and walked into his room. Sighing in exhaustion I unlocked my door and walked inside. The moment I opened my door, I saw nothing but pitch black darkness.

Then, I remembered seeing candle lamp stands by my couch and in the corners of the room. Feeling my way around, I made it to my desk and found some matches in the drawer and lit the candles next to the couch. Right now would be the perfect opportunity to look through the books that were stuffed in my bookcase.

Taking one of the books, I sat on my couch and blew the dust off of it. “The History of Dragons…hmmm interesting.” I said aloud. To tell you the truth, I had forgotten all about the dragons. Then I started to reminisce about all the times my father told stories about them. “Daddy! Can you tell me another story about dragons?” I asked. “Dear little Iris, how many stories must I tell you?” he smiled.

“A zillion!” I cried out and he laughed. “Alright, alright. Once upon a time, their lived a silver dragon.” He began. “Yay!” I yelled and sat on his lap. “The silver dragon had the power to tell anyone their future. And as you know, he would pick the ones that would ride the other four dragons. How many dragons is that in all?” he asked me. I raised up my little fingers and started to count. “One….two…three…four…five!” I said and smiled at him. “That’s right! The five dragons. And do you know what happened to the fifth dragon rider? He became more and more interested in the five dragon’s powers. He soon learned that when putting the five dragon’s powers together, he could be unstoppable. So he started a war against the other four kingdoms.” He said to me.

“What happened next?!” I asked with anxiousness. “He managed to get three of the dragons. The last one was the silver dragon. Do you know what he did?” he asked me. “What daddy?! What did he do?!” I asked nervously. “He told everyone in that kingdom of a person who would be called ‘The Dragon Savior’ and would save all the kingdoms from a horrible fate. Word spread throughout the kingdoms quickly about this ‘Dragon Savior’. And sure enough, the Silver Dragon found him. He was from Comoros, the main kingdom that rules over all of the others. He rode the silver dragon and saved all five kingdoms from the evil fifth rider!” he finished the story.

“Yay! I love happy endings daddy!” I said and clapped my little hands. “Now, can you remember the names of our kingdoms?” he asked testing my knowledge. “The first one is…Comoros. The second is Serai. The third one is…ummm…” I stuttered. “Danao.” My father filled in the blank. “Yeah, the fourth one is Yulara. And the last one is Samara. That’s the one were in right daddy?” I told him.

“That’s right! The main kingdom! Where the king lives and rules over all of Sankari!” he stood up and held up a stick as if it was a sword. My childish laughter filled my mind as the memory faded away. Opening the book, I looked at the table of contents. One of the chapters caught my eye.

“The next Dragon Savior, interesting…” I said turning to the chapter. “’After defeating the fifth dragon rider, the Silver Dragon set out to pick the next dragon rider for the Black Dragon. One that would hopefully, not abuse his powers. He finally found one in the kingdom of Danao. After doing so, the Silver Dragon predicted that another evil would try to take the five dragons again. And once again, the next ‘Dragon Savior’ would take care of it.

But those words were said a hundred years ago and are now considered a myth.’” I read aloud. “Okay, that’s enough dragon business for one night.” I said closing the book and putting it back into the library. I had to get a good night sleep anyway being that it was probably eleven by now. I blew out all the candles and went to my bedroom.

Taking off my slippers, I slid my feet into my covers and lay my head on my pillow. A ton of things ran through my mind as I thought about work, the dragons, John, Blade, Derron, and Matthew. Then I thought about what kind of information John might give me tomorrow about Zara. “Zara.” I said aloud. Just thinking about the name made my skin crawl. Slowly, I drifted into a deep sleep.

“…has managed to obtain four dragons. All…..needs is…” a voice mumbled in my dream. “Find the…save our…” it mumbled again. The Silver Dragon flashed through my mind. He flew into the sky with only the moon as light. His silver scales shined in the moonlight. Then he let out a loud roar.

Suddenly, I appeared in the streets of my kingdom. “Get the women and children into the shelter! The men will come with me to try and fight off the Fifth Dragon and his goons. Go!” a man cried out. I stared at the man who was leading everyone against the fifth dragon rider. He looked extremely familiar but I couldn’t put my finger on it. I decided to follow them.

The men marched out right outside the kingdom gates to an open plain where the army of the fifth dragon rider waited. I kept my eyes on the young man until I realized where exactly I was. My father told me a story when I was little, that he fought against the fifth dragon rider who was trying to get his filthy paws on the dragon that lived in our kingdom. I realized that I was in that story right now.

The silver dragon that I saw earlier was signaling danger. “Thankfully I survived that horrid day.” I heard my father’s voice. That gave me assurance that this dream wouldn’t be as terrible as I thought it would. “Charge!” my father said bravely leading all the men in the kingdom. I watched as he fought and killed everyone in his path.

At that moment I realized this dream was about to get worse. There, right next to the fifth dragon rider, was Zara. My father bravely charged at the woman. “Foolish man, now I know where she gets it from.” She said as she pulled out her gold dagger and plunged it into his heart. “No!!” I cried out running towards them. Every time I took a step forward, everything would start to fade into blackness.

I kept running and running until I couldn’t see a thing. “Foolish girl. Do you really think you could save him? He is gone because you didn’t reach him in time. You coward!!” the voice called out from every side. Then I felt something behind me, as if someone was breathing on my shoulder.  "Did you ever think things always end up with a happy ending?" the female voice said. “Murderer!” I said drawing my sword and challenged her. “You killed my father! You will pay!” I screamed.

“You never win Iris, and you never will.” I screamed at her and charged at her stomach with my sword only to miss. “Hahahaha!” she laughed as I kept trying. And like the end of most nightmares I jolted awake.

My covers were all on the floor from tossing and turning. I wondered how long I could keep having these nightmares. It was now just before dawn. And once again, I’m going to have a long day. I had to meet with John this morning before work, and then I had to work, and then have dinner with the King. The King! I totally forgot about the dinner until now. Today’s going to be beyond busy.

Chapter 8

Yawning, I stretched out my legs and arms. I got up and took my clothes and riding boots out of the closet. Somewhere, I was going to fit in some riding time with the horse I want. I started my way to the bathes, taking my sweet time. When I reached the bathes, once again, when I came in, everyone found some excuse to leave. “Eh, more hot water for me.” I said looking at the bright side.

I put my hair in a bun so I don’t get it wet and started soaking. By the time I came out, my fingers were like prunes. I threw on my clothes and boots and started towards the door. But every step I took closer to the door, I could hear people and by the sounds of it, gossiping.

Putting my ear next to the door, I eavesdropped into the conversation. “Well, I was cleaning the King’s office and my ‘resources’ told me that she did a duel against Derron!” an old raspy voice said. “Oh Derron! He’s soooooo handsome!” a younger voice said.

“Well I heard that she was dueling against Blade, not Derron!” a more sophisticated voice said. “Blade? That annoying soldier?! No way! It was definitely Derron. I heard that she actually left him a cut on his arm! No one has ever gotten that close!” they all gasped. “She left my love a cut! How dare she!” the younger one said.

“Oh quit your whining. Derron doesn’t even know you exist! Besides, your much to annoying and clingy.” Sophisticated Voice said. “I’ll have you know that one time while I was scrubbing the floors, he glanced me a smile!” Young Annoying Voice said. “Well, rumor has it that she had a tie with him. They both gave up!” Raspy Voice said. “That must be a rumor! My Derron would never give up! Especially with some new two-timing twit!”

Young Annoying voice said. “That is enough!” I thought in my head as I busted open the door hitting Young Annoying Voice’s shoulder. “Ouch!” she screamed. Looking at the three people, Raspy Voice was an old maid Sophisticated Voice was a maid but not as old as Raspy Voice, and I wasn’t quite sure what Young Annoying Voice was.

I glared at them all. All of them gaped when seeing my face. Finally, Sophisticated Voice grew some courage to stand up to me. “I say, where are your manners stable girl! You knocked right into us and didn’t apologize!” She said. “I say, where is your common sense ladies, it’s not that smart to stand right in front of a door.”

I said imitating her in the way she talked. Right then, they knew that I had heard their whole conversation. Ignoring their dumb look on their face, I just started my way to the kitchen. Then I remembered that I was to have that talk with John.

Knowing that I’d get more information on Zara and what she was really involved in made me feel a bit uncomfortable. And right when I opened the kitchen doors, the smell of fresh bread from the oven filled my nose and the first face I saw was…John. Followed by a warm greeting from Chef Richard. “Iris! Come in! have some fresh bread with butter! Maybe some bacon and eggs to!” he said pulling out a seat by the table for me that John was sitting at.

“Here eat! You’re to skinny.” He said putting a plate full of eggs, bacon, bread with butter, and a cup of fresh orange juice. “Thanks Rich” I said sitting down. “Good morning Iris.” John said with a not so warm face. “Good morning John.” I said with the same tone. “While you’re eating we might as well have that talk I said I’d have with you about…” he stopped in mid sentence and glared at Richard.

“Yes sir…I will leave you to your private conversation.” Richard said frowning and walking out. “About Zara.” He finished. “Why send Richard out of the room?” I asked while taking a bite of food. “We don’t need any more rumors floating around in the castle about you wouldn’t you agree?” he asked and I nodded. “Alright then. So do you have any questions?” he asked. “Yes, what exactly is Zara really involved in? I know she took often visits to the castle but why?” I asked. “Zara has always been involved in political matters. Mostly about dragon business. She’s somewhat a friend to the King and visits him once a month. Last time I heard, she’s not going to be able to come once a month anymore because of ‘business matters’ but she’ll visit every once in a while.” He said.

“Interesting…” the thought of seeing Zara again made me lose my appetite. “Why is it in your interest? I understand that you lived with Zara and Damara for quite some time.” He asked. A sudden shiver ran down my spine when he said the name Damara.

Flashbacks of her face and whip came into view. And then my sword with blood running down the blade flashed through my mind and sudden screaming echoed in. Shaking my head of the horrid memory I answered John. “I’d rather not talk about it.” I said. “Alright then, when your ready to tell me th-“ he started. “No. I’ll never be ready to tell you, or anyone. Some things are better left within one person.” I butted in. “Do not interrupt my statements Ms. Iris. Are we clear?” he said. “You know, its getting a little late, I better get to work at the stables. Thanks for the info.”

I said getting up and walking away. When pushing the doors open I accidentally ran into Richard. Not to my surprise he was holding a glass cup in his hand. “Oh please Miss!” he started. “Apology accepted, I won’t tell John. Just make sure it doesn’t happen again.” I said.

“Thank you Miss! I am in your debt!” he said bowing and going in the kitchen. Sighing, I started walking towards the stables. I had a lot of work that needed to be done around there. When reaching the stables, my hard day of labor began. I started off filling the troughs with food and water for all the horses. Coming across the filly I wanted, I gave her a carrot for to munch on.

I couldn’t wait to ride her on lunch break. After filling all the troughs, I had to do my least favorite job, manure scooping… Going into the shed, I got a rake to get all the foul stuff out of one of the stalls. “Oh, hi I didn’t see you.” I said surprised. “Oh, sorry I didn’t scare you right?” he said.

“No not at all I was just surprised to see you Derron.” I replied. “Good. I was just taking out Aero for a ride.” He said. “Who?” I questioned. “Aero? My horse?” He said. “Oh okay.” “So, did you choose your horse yet?” he asked me. “I think so. I want the dark chestnut filly.” I replied. “Ooh, she’s a wild thing. You should probably choose another one. She won’t even let John near her! And he’s an expert at horses!” he said. “Are you saying that I couldn’t possibly ride her?” I questioned. “That’s exactly what I’m saying.” He replied.

“Hmph, I beg to differ.” I replied starting my way to the saddles and bridles. “No Iris, your making a big mistake! You could get hurt!” he said worried. “Trust me, I’ve gone through a lot worse things.” I replied taking her out of the stall and putting the saddle and bridle on her.

“Wow, she actually let you put on the saddle!” he said as he finished saddling up Aero and was now sitting on top of her. “That’s nothing.” I said leaping up and sitting on top of her. “Race ya to the corral.” I challenged but he was to busy gaping to respond. And before he knew it I was off.

Shaking his head, he galloped off to catch up with me. By the time he reached me and my horse, we had already gone around the corral twice. Finally, for the first time in a long time, I actually had fun and laughed. About a half hour pasted by and we were still galloping around the corral. “Alright, I think we should probably give the horses a break from the nonstop galloping.”

Derron said stopping his horse. “You’re probably right.” I answered as we got off the horses and headed back to the stables. As we got closer and closer, I noticed that a dark blue figure waiting for us. “Oh no…” I thought as I figured out who it was. “Have a nice ride?” he said sarcastically. “Yes it was quite enjoyable.” I snapped back.

“I hope you realize Iris that you have just wasted away a half hour of work. If this is to happen again, the work you missed will be doubled. Understand?” John said firmly.

“Oh come on John! Lighten up a bit! She’s only been here a day and your pounding on her!” Derron said in my defense only to receive a glare from John. “I’m sorry for my outspokenness Adviser. It won’t happen again.” Derron may have said that with respect but his eyes said otherwise. “Get back to work.”

John said to me and walked away. “I gotta go, its about time to do drills on the soldiers. See ya at dinner, I’ll be in the kitchen.” Derron said to me and bowed. “As much as I’d love to, the King as invited me to dinner tonight. Maybe some other time.” I said and curtsied. “Oh, okay. Well, see ya!” he said and walked away.

Chapter 9

The rest of the day seemed to have passed by to quickly. And before I knew it, I was done with work and on my way to the baths with my clothes. And as always, when I entered, everyone found some dumb excuse to leave. It never really bothered me; in fact because of them I had the whole baths to myself.

Taking off all of my dirty sweaty clothes, I took a nice long bath, only getting out when my fingers and toes were like prunes. The formal attire I chose was a beautiful, strapless green gown that sparkled with gold at the ends. Along with it was a gold necklace and chandelier earrings with diamonds. “I’d never thought I’d see the day that I’d be wearing something as fancy as this.” I said to myself as I put little bobby pins with little crystals at the ends in my jet black hair, making it sparkle.

Then I started my way to the dining room where the King and John should be. Keeping my steps small and walking quickly made me seem like I was gliding over the floor, enhancing my elegance. Everyone I passed couldn’t help but gape at me. “Isn’t that the rat from the prison cell?” I heard some whisper.

I recognized one of the people gossiping as Annoying Voice. The one completely in love with Derron. And of course, she and Raspy Voice, and Sophisticated Voice were all laughing and talking at me as if I wasn’t even there.

Ignoring their annoyance, I kept going until I reached double doors with two guards standing next to them. “Excuse me; this wouldn’t happen to be the dining room would it?” I said politely. “The King and Advisor have been expecting you.” They said in unison as they opened the two large doors.

I couldn’t help but gape at the amazing room I saw. It was far more beautiful than the one back at House Griffin! The candle lights lit the whole room and reflected off the marble walls and pillars. The carpeted floor was a red wine and was complimented with a dark rose wood long table in the middle of the room. And in the middle of the ceiling was a large gold chandelier accompanied by many crystals that shined.

Seated at the end of the long table was an older man who looked in his early 50’s. He was average height and round but not fat cheeks. His black beard and hair was peppered with white and grey, and auburn eyes that were filled with wisdom. Sitting of the right side was John who looked a little angry, probably because I’m ten minutes late. “You’re Grace. Thank you for inviting me to dinner.” I said curtsying. “John.” I said turning towards him and giving another curtsy. “Welcome young Iris, we’ve been expecting you.” The low booming kingly voice said. “I’m sorry to have kept you waiting Your Majesty. I got caught up at work today.” I said walking towards a seat. One of the valets standing by pulled out my seat and pushed me in. “Thank you.” I said to him. “You…you’re welcome Miss.” He stuttered.

When he walked back to his place I noticed him shudder and fear filled his eyes. After some small talk with the two of them Richard came out from the kitchen. “Dinner is served!” he called out as all the valets came and placed dinner trays in front of us.

Pulling all the information about table manners my dad taught me out from my mind, I straightened my back and began eating carefully and gracefully. “So,” The King began. “Iris, I’d like to know about your life story.”

“I grew up with my mother and father up till I was 5 years old. But as much as they loved me, they had to give me to House Griffin because our small family was going through a famine. They didn’t have enough money to feed all three of us. House Griffin was more than happy to take me in.” I lied.

The King cocked an eyebrow. I knew why, it wasn’t a likely story that a young woman would assassinate Damara after she took her in because of a famine. And John’s face said it all, he knew I was lying.

Deciding not to press further, the King changed subjects. “Well, how are you enjoying your job as a stables master? By John’s reports you must have some experience with horses correct?”

“Yes I have actually. I’ve been with horses all my life and I really am enjoying my job as a stables master thank you. You have been very generous to me.” I said

“You flatter me Iris.” A warm smile was on his face but his eyes said ‘I’ll give you a chance.’ Then he looked at John so as to tell him to get involved with the conversation. The valets brought out sorbet for dessert.

“So I see you have been making a few friends now.” John said attempting to be polite.

“Yes, I have. I believe there names were Matthew, Derron, and Blade.” I replied.

“Ah Derron! Quite a good fellow! He’s the best captain I’ve had yet.” The King continued. “And Matthew has almost made his way to being a captain as well.”

“Well, then, I guess you picked the right crowd to associate with Iris, except for that Blade fellow.” John said as if trying to make a joke…how cute. Both John and the King laughed, but I had to force it out.

“Well this has been an exceptionally great dinner. My compliments to the chef.” I said getting up from my seat.

“We will be sure to give the message to him. Thank you for joining us.” The King said as both he and John rose from their seats.

“Thank you for everything Your Majesty.” I said curtsying to him and then John. John bowed back, and I left the room.

Chapter 10

Time seemed to pass by to quickly. And before I knew it, I had been living at the castle for a half a year already! My relationships with my new friends progressed until we all became known as the four amigos. But I became probably closer to Derron than to Blade and Matthew. Derron and I spent all of our extra time riding our horses in the corral. There was no sign of Zara visiting the castle anywhere, I was in the clear. Although I still had criticism from people I passed by, and still heard gossip.

But that didn’t really bother me much. Other than that, things were running more than smoothly. And now that it was autumn, the green leaves were turning into bright oranges and reds and yellows and browns. “Hey Iris!” Derron walked over to where I was by the shed. “Yeah?” I asked him. “You done yet? I wanted to go for a ride in the corral before I go for dinner.”

“Yeah I’m just finishing up.” I replied, it was almost sunset. We took out Aero and my horse and headed over to the corral. The freedom I feel while riding was indescribable! The autumn crisp air and breeze blowing in my face while riding my horse made me feel like I was soaring through the colorful sky! And yet that hardly portrayed it. Gaining speed I started to challenge Derron with taunting. “I accept your challenge.” He said with a smile, and we took off.

Out of the corral and then through the trees of a forest. I started picking up the pace to the point where I went past Derron until I couldn’t see him anymore. Deciding to wait for him, I stopped and waited. A couple minutes pasted by, then all of a sudden he galloped past me full speed. “Hey, no fair!” I said laughing and caught up with him. We reached a stream in the forest where we decided to stop. Then, we took off the saddles on the horses and let them graze, while we both laid against a big oak tree. “That was awesome! Good race, good race.” Derron said with a huge smile on his face.

“Yeah, it was. I can’t remember the last time I laughed like that, it’s been a while.” I told him. Lost in thought, we fell into silence looking down for a short time, then finally I spoke up. “Ya know? I haven’t named my horse yet.”

“Hmmm… That’s problematic.” He replied. “How about something like Wild or Thunder? Neh, to cheesy.” I said. “How about…Aimi?” Derron suggested. “Aimi? I like it! What’s that mean?” I asked raising an eyebrow. He looked away, and turned red. “Well?” I asked again, this time a little confused as to why he blushed. Then he spoke up “It means…” We both heard a horse galloping towards us.

And not to my surprise, it was John. “Ms. Iris, I had a feeling you’d run off eventually.” “We just went for a ride to the stream. Besides, she’s off of work anyways.” Derron defended me. “That isn’t why I’m here Captain.” He glared at Derron. “I was leaving a message with Iris to tell her that she has another dinner meeting with the King tomorrow at sundown. It’s getting dark and she and you should be getting back to the castle.” He said. They both eyed each other. “Yes, Adviser.” Derron replied and bowed just in time for him to run off.

Derron and I rode back to the stables in silence, wrapped in our own thoughts. Why would the King want another dinner meeting? I don’t get it. I couldn’t be of that much interest to him. Reaching the stables just before dusk, I wasn’t to happy about it. “It was my pleasure riding with you Iris.” Derron said bowing. “The pleasure is all mine.” I replied and curtsied to go. We both started walking in opposite directions. “Iris!” he called back. “Yes?” I turned.

He looked at me for a minute in silence, and then he finally said “Good night.” I nodded my head back. That was probably the most wonderful time I’ve ever had. I thought to myself as I walked back to my room to get my clothes and take a bath. I made friends and have a job and live somewhere of my own! I was still in shock that this all actually happened. I picked up my clothes and took a quick bath because I hadn’t realized how ravenous I was.

On my way to the kitchen I had to pass through a corridor with many doors. From one of the doors, I saw light from under it, and as I got closer I heard two voices. “You know I’ve always been fond or a friend of you Zara, but you’ve already asked me once.” I recognized the voice as the King and my eyes widened at her name. “Oh come now! I’m offering a very reasonable amount of money for her!” she replied.

“I do not understand why you want Iris back, she killed your dear friend Damara. Why would you want her back in your household?” he questioned strongly. “Because, you said yourself she’s been behaving well, and instead of seeing her hanged, I just want to give her the proper punishment. It’s for the best of the girl.” Zara replied in a phony innocent voice. I heard footsteps from behind me, and that’s when I hid behind a corner. A girl, between thirteen and fifteen walked by with a letter in her hand. She had red marks on her face and clothing that made her look foreign.

I was guessing she was from the Neko Tribe. She knocked on the door where the King and Zara were conversing. “Come in.” The King called. Then I walked back up to the door watching through the crack. “Greetings, from the Neko Tribe your Highness.” The girl said. “We have an urgent message from the Silver Dragon.” She handed him the letter. “Thank you Catherine.” He said to the girl.

“We will talk about this later.” He said to Zara opening the letter. He read it, and after five minutes turned to Catherine. “Please, go and give this to Adviser John and tell him plans have changed a little.” He said and handed the letter to Catherine. “Yes your Majesty.” “Anything wrong you’re Highness?” Zara asked with sudden interest. “Just, business.” He said unwilling to elaborate. I saw Zara glare and suddenly look in my direction with her eyes. “I know your there. Eavesdropping is such a shameful aspect to have Iris. Don’t think you’ve rid of me, I will not rest until you don’t exist.” A sudden pain hit my head, so overwhelming tears streaked down my face. I ran to my room, but as I did, I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere.

It was as if I was running in place, and I couldn’t walk any further. My head started to spin dizzily until I collapsed onto the floor. “Just a little reminder, a warning perhaps.” She said in my head. And the last thing I saw was her standing over me, with a grim smile.

Chapter 11

“Iris?” a voice asked. “Iris? Are you okay??” The voice asked again. My vision was blurred as I opened my eyes. “What happened to you?” I recognized the voice. My vision focused as I woke up and saw Elena the seamstress standing over me with a candle. Slowly I sat up moaning, to see I was still in the hallway where I fell. “I, I think so…” I replied. “You must have taken quite a fall to be unconscious like that! I hope you don’t get some kind of concussion or something! Here, maybe I should take you to the doctor…” she started as she helped me up but I shrugged her aside. “No, no doctors. I’m fine.” I said. “No, I insist! I want to make sure that you are okay!” she repeated taking my arm and heading me in the opposite direction of which I was going in the first place. “Thank you for your concern Elena but I assure you I’m fine.” I said more firmly this time. “Well, alright. But if I see anything like that again I will take you to the doctor whether it’s against your will or not! And you must promise me you will have no complaints!” She said with a sort of sweet yet unyielding voice that reminded me of Annora. “Alright, I promise.” I replied, giving in. “Well, then head off to the bathes. I can tell you need one!” She said waving her hand to get rid of my apparently horrible odor. “Alright, I will. Good night Annor-…” I trailed off, then picked up where I left off. “Good night Elena.” She curtsied and I watched her walk down the long corridor until I could no longer see her candlelight. Walking around several corners, I made it to the bathes where I pleasurably poured in large amounts of sweet scented oils. After doing so, I soaked myself in the hot water, washing my dirty feet and hair and the sweat from my back. Just when things get good I thought Zara comes into the picture again. Why can’t she just let me go? What’s so special about me that she has to torture me and watch me suffer! I don’t have anything to do with her life anymore, why is she willing to buy me back? She didn’t care about Damara that much. No, there has to be another reason… I pondered for that reason for a while, but didn’t come up with any solutions, and decided that Zara was just another one of those people who like to torture people as their hobbies. There can’t be any other reason. Satisfied with my conclusion, I got out and dressed myself. And then headed my way down to the kitchen where I’m sure Richard had a plate of food waiting for me as he always did, even though it was late. And just as I had expected, there was Richard in the kitchen cleaning up, with a plate of food on the table. “There you are Iris! I was beginning to worry that you were going to starve yourself tonight!” He said with a warm smile on his face that made me laugh. “I would never skip a meal when I know Richard the Best Chef in all Sankari is cooking it!” he gave me one of his hearty laughs and I sat to chow down. Tonight’s dinner was a juicy piece of marinated steak with a mix of fried mushrooms and different types of peppers, fresh bread out of the oven and salad. I chewed slowly, savoring the flavor. Richard always made the best foods, and this was probably one of the best. Although my favorite dish he ever made was his roasted potatoes and chicken. “I always enjoy watching you eat Iris! You put so much oomph into it that you make the food look ten times better than it is!” he laughed again as he saw me finish waxing the plate. “Thanks Rich! That was once again a great meal!” I said walking out the door. “No problem Iris! I think you’ll like tomorrow’s breakfast to!” he replied. The hallways were unfortunately very dark, and I didn’t have a candle, so I decided to pick up the pace walking down to my room. I didn’t want take my time knowing that Zara was still hunting me down. Who knows what is lurking in the dark corners, not lit by the moonlight. As I fast walked down the hallways I suddenly stopped in my tracks. Something had just occurred to me. Magicians do not exist in Sankari…The only magic ever known was only used by the Dragons who do not use their power for evil except the Black Dragon. What did Zara do to me that she was able to talk in my head and knock me out? She wasn’t even touching me! Sounds like she was somehow connected to the Black Dragon. My eyes widened. But, the Black Dragon used evil more than a hundred years ago! The silver dragon found a new rider and that is all that is recorded. This is nuts Iris! Zara using magic, the Black Dragon doing evils again, that’s crazy talk! No one has ever heard of evils since before the Serenity! I said shrugging off the thought. It was ridiculous. I hurried up faster down to my room and went to bed. Although I was comfortable, I still felt restlessness in my legs and in my mind. There was no way I was going to sleep tonight. I was stuck in the zone of half asleep and never made it past, into dreamland. Frustrated, I decided to walk off the restlessness around my room. Pacing, I distracted myself with other thoughts, for some strange reason that always helped me sleep better anyways. Tomorrow I have a dinner meeting with the King again…I wonder what he wants. He’s probably going to tell me that he sold me to Zara. I thought sarcastically. The conversation they had came back. I wonder what was in that letter. It was obviously important if the King didn’t tell even Zara…Oh well…Then I thought about Derron. I still wonder what Aimi means. Why did he blush like that? I guess I’ll find out eventually, I don’t want to put him on in an uncomfortable position. I stopped pacing. And my thoughts fell silent for a time… Why me? How have I gotten so many chances like this? Chances to live! Then I said aloud, “Why me?!” The thought made me even more frustrated. I have three friends, I have never had friends other than Annora. How? How could any one be a friend of a filthy rat, or a murderous saber? A person would have to be a fool, I know I wouldn’t do that. Then why do they? I don’t get it! I said throwing myself onto my bed. It made no sense, unless it was some kind of trick. Blade has always tricked people, how do I know this isn’t one of them? And Matthew, he can be a little to quiet sometimes, I wonder what he thinks. Could it be the thoughts of how to bring me down? Then I thought of Derron. He can be very mischievous to. What if they are all spies of Zara? Derron could be one, what if when he brought me to that stream in the forest it was to be an attempt to kill me? And John came just before the act was committed? It all seemed to come together. I had so easily trusted them, how could I lose my focus? How could I let people just walk into my life like that and not know who they really were? I guess I wanted a friend so badly, I let three phonies walk into my life instead. I started to feel a ball of rage, fear, and doubt in the pit of my stomach. I never wished to be betrayed again. I’ve had that happen to me for the last time. Did you really think that this could all really happen Iris? Reality check, that was never going to happen remember? How could it all happen instantly? It can’t… The ball in my stomach morphed into a grief of pain and hurtfulness. A tear rolled down my cheek, wiping it away. I am no coward. I said to myself. I think its time to find out if they are really my friends. I said, but then shut my eyes and fell fast asleep.

Morning rose, and another day of work began as always. I got up, and changed, a little sluggish but more upset than anything. Then, I headed off to the kitchen. “Good morning Iris!” Richard greeted me, and then looked at me sideways. “Are you okay? You don’t seem well this morning.” He said concerned. “I’m fine.” I mumbled. “That’s quite the contradiction.” He served me breakfast. “Thank you.” I said politely and started eating. Richard started kneading the dough when Blade walked in. “Hey Iris! How’s it going?” He said sitting down at the table. I glared at him, and he raised an eyebrow. “Is everything alright Iris?” he asked confused. “Everything’s just peachy!” I said sarcastically. “Uhhh…Okay?” he replied. “Is there anything wrong?” I didn’t reply. Finally Blade laughed and crossed his arms. “Iris, is it that time of mo-…” “No Blade! Its not, what is it? Ask Iris twenty questions day?” I got up and left. Blade looked at Richard, and then back to the door, confused. “Was it something I said?” he asked Richard. “I don’t think so. She doesn’t seem in the best mood today!” Blade chuckled. “Doesn’t seem in the best mood? Something’s up. If anything Derron will be the one to find out first.” He shrugged. I went to the stalls and started changing out the hay in them, taking out my anger in scraping. And oh joy, not to my surprise Derron showed up. “Uhhh…Iris? Why are you mad at the hay?” he asked making a joke. “I’m not mad at the hay.” I replied, biting my tongue to hold the anger in. “Then what’s wrong?” he asked. “Hold the questions, and let me ask you some.” I said turning around. “I was taken here as a prisoner, because of a murder, a murder. And all of a sudden I am excused from it because of…” I trailed off, the image of Annora smiling in my mind. “Because of a letter saying that it was in my defense. No one asked any questions about it, that was it. Then suddenly I make three friends…I have never had any friends other than one. And I’m just supposed to go on with life? And not question anything either?” tears started to well in my eyes. “Why me? How can I trust anyone? How can I trust you?” Derron backed up. “Iris, I would…“ I cut him off. “No one has ever trusted me, and everyone has always treated me like the dirt under their shoe. I have always been lied to, all my life. How do I know you’re not lying to me now? How do I know your not one of those people? No one, ever liked me here, and then you show up. And you are so kind to me, and don’t even question me, or have doubts. Why?” This time tears started to fall. “Iris, obviously you have been hurt, and more than once.” He said wiping a tear from my eye. “But I’m telling you now, I would never in my life, lie to you.” He said sitting down on a barrel of food for the horses. “The day I met you, I didn’t know exactly who you were. All I saw was a charming young lady that was new around here, who asked me for some help. Blade and Matthew told me who you were and your experience when you first met Blade after the duel we had. I felt really bad…” he trailed off. “Why would you feel pity for a criminal?” I asked. He looked up at me his eyes more serious. “You’re not the only one with a past Iris. I’ve done things that I’m not proud of.” He said. I didn’t pursue the matter further, obviously he didn’t want to talk about it. “I’m sorry I ever doubted you.” I said turning my head away, feeling a bit ashamed. “No, you had every right to. I should know that it would feel strange to have a kind person to walk into your life after hard things in the past…It is hard to trust, in general.” He said, giving me comfort. “I forgive you, Iris. We don’t have to speak further on the matter. I will see you later.” He said, and got up to leave. “Thank you.” I said to him as he did. He smiled, and left.

Chapter 12

After that conversation, I felt really bad that I yelled at Blade and acted foolishly in front of Richard. Although it eased me that day a little knowing that they weren’t traitors, I still had the strangest feeling that I couldn’t describe in the pit of my stomach that no matter how hard I tried, would not go away. Troubled? I asked myself. No…no that wasn’t it. Apprehensive? No, sort of. It was a mixed emotion of apprehensiveness and a trapped feeling. The horse I was grooming nudged me affectionately urging me to go on brushing her because I accidentally got lost in thought. She was a very dark brown Philly, almost black, with the most beautiful brown eyes. “Well, I think that’s enough for now, don’t you think.” She neighed in disagreement. “I’ll give you a sweet carrot?” I bribed her. Then she headed out into her stall, as if she knew what I meant. I laughed at her, and kept my promise to her as soon as I latched the hook. “Now its my turn to eat!” I said to her and pulled out my lunch. Richard packed me a delicious sandwich filled with ham, a white cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a creamy substance that wasn’t butter, but was smeared on the bread. Richard told me it was called “mayonnaise”. He said he had gotten the recipe from a famous chef over in the

Kingdom of Yulara. I almost liked it more than butter. It had the strangest sensation on my tongue, and yet the most delicious! It didn’t taste bitter, but a little bit of sweetness and a tiny bit of saltiness but not quite. My sandwich was followed by a sweet bright red apple. After resting for about ten minutes afterwards, it was back to work. I kept at it with grooming all of the horses until there was only one quarter left of working time. After all that time of thinking, I still couldn’t figure out the name of my feeling. And so I still thought of it as I filled up all of the water troughs and filled the food troughs for the night. And for the last half hour of time left, I finished up with putting in some fresh hay in each of the stalls. Now that the sun was starting to set, and I began to long for the name of my feeling, now added with the feeling of frustrated ness. I walked down to the castle and headed to my room to get comfortable clothes and head to the bathes. When I got there, I noticed a note on my door way. Huh, so he decided to stay out of my room this time?

Please wear the best clothing you have in your wardrobe and head down to the Throne Room, dinner arrangements have changed.

King’s Adviser

Dinner! I totally forgot! I wasn’t sure why we were going to the throne room to have dinner but whatever. I looked at the grandfather clock and saw that I still had an hour before I was late. At least I wouldn’t have to rush my bath. I went in the room and looked for the most formal gown I had and grabbed it, rushing towards the bathes. On my way there, I ran into Elena. “Hello Iris!” she said cheerfully. “Hi Elena, I’m sorry but I really got to go…” I started walking again, and she followed. “What’s the rush?” she asked. “I’m going to be late for a formal dinner with the King, and I need to look descent at least!” I said hurrying. “Oh! I almost forgot! I overheard about that and I actually got some things in the bathing area for you! I got some makeup and jewelry and I can do your hair to! I love doing things like that and I’m used to doing emergency quick jobs to, can I help?” she asked as we entered the bathes. “You are more than welcome to help me.” I said. I could use all the help I can get anyways, I was never good at those types of things. “Alright! Let’s start with a bath, go ahead and take a quick one while I get my things ready for you!” She said clapping and started grabbing things from a corner that she had prepared. I threw off my clothes and practically jumped in and hurried, washing my body. By the time I was done she already had my dress ready for me to put on. “I remember making this one! And you’re the perfect size!” She said helping me put it on. It was a scarlet red halter evening gown, very beautiful, with sequins on the top of it, draping down to the floor. The dress was very slimming, and just like what she said, fit me very well. “No time to admire the dress now! We have to hurry! Next we’ll do your hair. I have a very nice hair concoction I made myself, it will make your hair shiny and with the most precise and beautiful waves.” She took my hair and a little bottle, and squeezed it on my hair and spread it all through. Then she took a comb and fashioned my hair into beautiful natural waves. Then she took a little container. “This is just some color for your lips, to make them a stunning red! Some liner on them wouldn’t hurt either.” She said taking another container. After putting on blush, eye shadow, and two liquids, one for my eyelashes and the other right on the bottom of my eyelids, she finally said “This is the last step, the simplest one!” She took out a case, inside was a set of two gold tear drop earrings with a striking red stone on the ends and a necklace with the same stone on the pendant to match. She put them on me. “Oh Iris! You look stunning!” I didn’t know what she was talking about until I turned into the full length mirror, and gasped. “Is, is that me?” I asked startled. “That my dear, is the reflection of a dazzling lady.” She said. All I could do is stare, shocked at the appearance I saw. “Well, go on dear! You’re already five minutes late!” she said pushing me out the door. “Go stride your way to the Throne Room!” she said. “I can’t ever thank you enough Elena!” I said honestly. “You just did!” now go on!” she said. And I started my way to the Throne Room. I passed by many maids and butlers and always overheard the same questions and murmurs. “Is that the stables girl?” A butler asked surprised. “I think so, but I can’t tell!” one maid said. When I was about two minutes away from the Throne Room I ran into Derron, who was also rushing. He to was also dressed formally, and looked quite handsome in the blue and gold he wore. He took one glance at me but didn’t recognize who I was. Then he turned back at me and gaped. “Iris? Is that you?” he asked me in disbelief. “You look, stunning!” he said. I couldn’t help but blush at the compliment. I had never gotten a compliment before, and it was new to me. “Thank you Derron.” I said and bowed my head, as he also did. “Where are you headed dazzled up like that?” he asked. “Down to the Throne Room, what about you?” I asked, he raised his eyebrow in confusion. “Me too.” I too was taken aback. “What? I was told that there was a-“ I started. “A dinner? Me too, I wonder what’s going on. Dinner’s don’t usually happen in the throne room, unless its of the utmost importance.”He told me concerned. We both walked to the Throne Room in silence, wrapped in our own thoughts of what could be going on. When we got there, the valets opened the double doors and we saw the King and his Queen sitting on their thrones, there wasn’t going to be a dinner. Derron bowed before the King and Queen. “You’re Highnesses.” He said. I curtsied myself and said the same. “To what great honor are we to be invited before your presence?” He asked in a sophisticated voice. “I have brought you two here in regard to a very important matter, concerning mostly you, Ms. Iris.” The King said, his voice booming. Oh no! I thought. Here comes the kill. “As you might or might not have known, there have been rumors about the Great Evils returning. And have actually been signs of it as well. I have gotten news that the Fifth Dragon Rider unfortunately doesn’t have enough will power to conquer the Dark Dragon.” He started. Umm… What does this have to do with me? Not what I expected. I said to myself. “We fear that he and the Dark Dragon might have evil plans for the Kingdoms. The Silver Dragon has confirmed this, and to be watchful for hidden evils as well.” The King looked at me straight in the eye, not able to hold his stare, I looked down. The Queen put her hands on the King’s. She was a little fragile, but not deathly. She has silver hair and grey eyes that looked like they were once a bright blue when she was young. And atop her head was a glistening crown. The King turned to her and smiled. Then turned back and looked at me again, which is when I looked down again. Throughout the whole thing, Derron stayed quiet, just listening, and waiting to know what this was all about. “The Silver Dragon had chosen you Iris, when you were born, to be the next Dragon Savior.” That’s when I looked up again, startled. “What?! You cannot be serious?! I’m sorry you’re Majesty, but you must be mistaken. I cannot be the Dragon Savior. Why, that’s preposterous!” I said with a nervous laugh. Derron looked at me surprised as well, but took the news seriously. “I am not mistaken, although I did have the same reaction as you when hearing the news.” I noticed Catherine in the background. Could that nonsense be true? Was that in the letter? “You’re Majesty, I could not be the Dragon Savior! I am not who you think I am your majesty, I am…” I trailed off, lost in words. “You humble yourself too much Iris. Quite the contrary, I know exactly who you are. And I am not mistaken. You are the Dragon Savior.” He said firmly. I could feel my head start to spin and my stomach churn. “Wh-…why is Derron here?” I attempted to say. “You will need to go on a expedition and visit all of the Dragons and get their blessing and talisman along with the riders, except the Dark Rider of course. The last one you will visit is the Silver Dragon. Derron is here because he will accompany you on your journey.” He gestured behind him, and the girl came forward. “This is Catherine, she will start you off on your journey, but she must return to her village so she can only take you so far. When that time comes, she will tell you the directions along with a map to take you the rest of the way.” I couldn’t believe any of this! Everything was happening so quickly, I couldn’t handle it. “Iris? Are you okay? You look pale.” Derron said looking at me concerned. “Iris? Iris?!” he kept asking me as everything started to spin in circles faster and faster and faster. The last thing I saw was the Queen stand up “Oh my!” she cried out, as I fell on to the floor and blacked out.

Chapter 13

“Is she going to be alright?” I heard a voice ask. “She’ll be fine, she just had quite a shock from the news she received. You can’t blame her after all, I mean, news as the Dragon Savior? That would scare me to.” An female voice said. “I think she’s waking up!” I groaned. “Jeez, you guys are such worry warts! Iris is a tough cookie no way she’s going to die from fainting.”

I opened my eyes and saw Matthew and Derron staring over me and Elena as well. “You’re alright!” Elena squealed. Derron smiled with relief, and Matthew laughed at Elena’s excitement. I sat up and looked around the room, realizing that I was in my suite, on the couch with a rag on my head. Looking behind the crowd I saw Blade sitting in a chair in the corner. “Told ya.”

He said smiling, proud that his prediction was right. “What happened?” I asked. “Well…When you and Derron were in the throne room, receiving information, and you being the Dragon Savior…you sort of…well…” Matthew tried to put it delicately as he always does, but was at loss of words. “Ya fainted. Plain and simple.” Blade blurted out.

“Blade!” he yelled at him. “What?” Matthew glared at him. Then, it all came back to me. The King and Queen sitting high on there thrones, Catherine, Derron all dressed up, my dress, and the faint. “How long ago was that?” “About two hours ago.” Elena answered. Derron kept silent looking down, wrapped in his thoughts, probably about his new mission.

I got up, and put my hand on his shoulder, which is when he looked up. “Are you alright?” I asked. He looked at me, and looked down again. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking… We start our journey this week. According to the King the Silver Dragon has told us to hasten to start our travel.” He said. “This week?!”

I was only here one year, it seemed like yesterday I made my friends. And to leave it all behind this week? I still was in shock from even being the Dragon Savior. Then I realized what the King had said. “You were chosen, when you were born to be the next Dragon Savior.” I restated it in my mind. When I was born? Why didn’t my father tell me? It doesn’t make sense! I said to myself. It really didn’t make sense. All of a sudden, I’m the Dragon Savior. Do I even get a say in this?

“No one ever asked me if I wanted to be The Dragon Savior.” I mumbled aloud. I now realized that Matthew, Elena, and Blade had left. Derron looked up and smiled, trying to comfort me. “It is a great honor to become the Dragon Savior.” He said. “But, I don’t want the honor, or glory. I don’t deserve any of it… No one has ever treated me with respect. Why should they all of a sudden now?” He looked at me and sighed, trying to find the right words.

Then he spoke up. “I have.” He said. “The King said that he knows exactly who you really are. It’s possible that he knows more about you than you do yourself. Do you remember your past Iris?” he asked me, trying to erase the doubt I had. “I vaguely remember most parts. But I do remember some important ones.”

I remembered my mother, running out of our house crying with a bloody knife in one hand and shivered. I wasn’t ready to share things like that yet. “It’s quite possible that in the parts you don’t remember about your life, you were chosen as the Dragon Savior.” He said. “And now, I would be honored to help you on that journey, if I have your approval of course.” He said charmingly and smiled.

“Well, I would be more than happy to have you accompany me.” I said with a sophisticated voice, and laughed. He gazed at me, with his bright tourmaline eyes. I turned away, unable to hold the gaze. “Well, the best part is that you are relieved of your duties to the horse stables from this point forward. You still get to keep Aimi though.” He said reassuring me. Surprisingly, that was a relief. I laughed. “I feel bad for the next sucker to take on the job.” I commented, and he laughed.

“We will be taking them and Catherine before dawn two days from now. So rest up and some servants will prepare some travel clothes and food from Richard will be made to last us until we reach the first Dragon.” I sighed in relief that I wouldn’t have to be without Richard’s food. “Alright, have Elena make you a cloak, you might need it. And I think that’s it.” He finished and then looked down again.

“Do you really think I can do this?” I asked him, not certain myself. “Iris, I’ve never been more sure. You’re skilled with a sword, you are brave and strong, I don’t think anything can go wrong.” He said, and then looked at me with those meaningful eyes again, this time wanting to say something. “Iris…I…I’m…” he started to say but sighed in frustration. “Never mind…” he said.

The first day passed quickly. And now it was the evening before we left the next morning. I used the first day wisely collecting information about the mission and making plans with Derron on what we would do after Catherine left and we were on our own.

“The King would love to ensure your safety by sending more people on our journey,” he explained. “But it would actually be making it more dangerous being that the Black Dragon is now after you, we need to go unseen.” The next thing on my list of things to do was visit Elena, to pick up that cloak she had for me along with traveling clothes of which she insisted on making herself.

I knocked on her door and opened it. “Oh, right on time Iris!” She said. “I was just giving Matthew some riding boots. I have your cloak right here.” She gave Matthew a pair of boots and picked up my cloak and a small pile of clothes. “Thanks again Elena.” Matthew said, looking at her with caring eyes that I’ve never seen before.

Elena giggled, turned away and blushed. “You’re welcome.” She said shyly. Matthew turned and left. I looked at Elena who was still blushing. “You like him don’t you?” I asked her with a sly smile. She gave a little gasp. “N-..no I don’t!” She wasn’t a very good liar. “You’re secret is safe with me.” I said. “Besides, I think he likes you to.” I said. She sighed and sat down. “I’ve always liked Matthew very much. I just don’t have the courage to tell him. He’s so sweet, and kind to me.” Her thoughts focused around him, her eyes lost in space.

“Oh, well, you better take these.” She said waking up from her day dream and handing me the clothes. “You should really tell him. I mean it.” I said. She giggled. “I know some day I’ll build enough courage.” She said and hurried me out the door.

“You better get some sleep! You’re leaving tomorrow!” she said. “I’ll sure miss you Elena.” I couldn’t believe I was giving up another friend. She hugged me and squeezed tight.

“I’ve sure never had a friend like you Iris. I’ll miss you too.” She said and let go. “Good bye for now.” She said, almost about to cry and closed to door. The hallways were again dark but this time I had the moon’s help to see my way around. On my way there, I couldn’t help but have the feeling that someone was watching me.

At one point I felt as if someone was breathing on my neck, making it prickle. But when I turned around, there was no one there. I started to fast walk, paranoid of what might be lurking around. “Well, well, well. If it isn’t the new Dragon Savior.” I immediately recognized the voice. She laughed at my gape.

“I must say, this one didn’t take me by surprise.” Zara emerged from the shadows with a smirk on her face. I stood my ground, not letting fear overpower me. “What do you want?” I said keeping cautious. “Relax Iris, I just wanted to congratulate you. I’ve learned to let you go.”

“And I’ve learned that you’re a really bad liar.” I sneered. She laughed again. “Alright, you caught me, now it’s my turn to catch you.” She glared at me. “I can’t kill you in the King’s palace; no you’re unfortunately protected by that wretched Derron and his friends. I’ll catch you off guard, be sure of that.”

“And what makes you think I’ll ever be off guard?” I started to draw my sword. She let out a laugh. “You can’t possibly kill me here! You killed Damara, and I was her loyal friend. You would obviously be the highest suspect. As you are, I am protected here as well. Like I said before, you will be dead if it’s the last thing I do.”

My eyes widened at the comment as she disappeared into the shadows. I remembered that she said those exact words in my dreams. All of those thoughts and feelings ran through my head, there was no stopping them all from overflowing my mind. I fell down on my knees holding my head. Tears streaked my cheeks as I struggled not to scream. As soon as I gathered my strength, I got up and ran with the clothes still in my hand as fast as I could to my room. I reached my room just in time for me to collapse onto my knees again, trying to open the handle. But I just couldn’t do it. To many thoughts, and memories gushed out into my mind.

“Iris! What’s wrong?!” Derron came just in time into the hallway and helped me up. He opened my door and led me to the couch where he sat me down. “Iris?! What’s the matter?!” he was very worried now. Tears still came down. “Z-…Zara. She...” I tried to say. But nothing came out. “Zara what? What did she do?” I felt like a child now. Finally the shivering and tears stopped.

But I still breathed heavily. “I’m sorry, I…I…” I trailed off, loss at words always seemed to overcome me lately. “Iris, you can always trust me, you can come to me for anything, and you know that.” He held my hand. “What happened?” he asked me again. I took a deep breath.

“This may not seem to make sense when I tell you, but I cannot tell you any further until I feel a need or feel ready to. I encountered Zara, just now. She has always been my enemy.” I started. He looked at me, but knew that I wouldn’t say further on that. “She wants to kill me.” Derron looked at me, his eyebrows pursed when hearing that. “She always has, and the reason why I was like that…before…was…” I started to think of ways to say it. “Go on.” He commanded. “I think she is somehow connected to my past, when I was first brought to her, there is something I can’t exactly remember. It’s somewhere locked in the back of my mind. For a moment I had grasped it, remembering everything. Which is why I was so disturbed, and now it’s lost to me.

There is a reason why she wants me dead, I can’t remember what…” I blurted out. Derron looked down, looking perturbed. “I will not, I repeat, will not let you get hurt Iris.” He said with a determination I had only seen when he was dueling. “You must get some rest, tomorrow is a big day.

We cannot tell the King of this, for he won’t believe it. Zara is his trusted friend. Maybe the Silver Dragon was right…” “Right about what?” I asked. “’Look for hidden Evils.’” He quoted from the King. He left the room, I laid in bed, although I didn’t sleep. Frustrated I couldn’t remember whatever it is I was trying to remember. I felt a shiver run down my spine at the thought of Zara hunting me down again. Finally, I drifted into an unsuccessful sleep.

Chapter 14

Morning arose too quickly for me. It was my last night in my comfortable bed, and I couldn’t even enjoy it. My thoughts had wondered too much for me to sleep. Too many questions came up, making it even harder. And now it was time for me to leave behind all of the memories made, behind my bed, but most importantly my friends.

I was glad that Derron was coming with me; he was always good at keeping me company when I felt lonely. I got dressed in my travel clothes and put on my cloak. I also carried a pack that held food and other necessities. I had a little pouch of money that I could strap to Aimi’s saddle.

And of course, I had my sword on my scabbard at all times. I had also decided to strap a dagger that Matthew made for me to my thigh, just in case. The knife had a golden handle, specially designed beautifully, with accents of a royal cerulean blue. After preparing, I headed off to the stables where Blade, Matthew, and Derron waited, paying attention to every little detail as I left, keeping it in my memory, the giant windows and blue and gold tapestries, the stone walls, and the long rug that adorned each hallway.

Who knew when I’d be back, or if I’d be back? I didn’t know what lay ahead of this journey, but I guess I was willing to find out. Sadly, I opened the door that lead to the stables. Derron was putting things on Aero’s saddle with Matthew and Blade finishing up Aimi.

“There’s the lady of the hour!” Derron said, I walked over to them. “We have everything ready to go. But the real question is, are you ready Iris?” Derron asked me.

I took in a deep breath of the cold icy air and breathed out to see the steam, and looked around me. It would be the last time or last time in a long time that I would ride in the corral, or take care of the horses, or ride off into the forest.

“I’m ready.” I said confidently.

“No matter how much of a pain in the butt you have been, I’m still going to miss you mi hermana.” Blade said to me giving me a big hug.

When he pulled away I looked at him sideways.

“Are you crying?!” that was a big shocker.

“No! I just got something in my eye!” he said rubbing them.

“Yeah, sure.” I laughed.

“By the way, why do you always call me that?”

“What?”

“What does hermana mean?” I asked again.

“Mi hermana means my sister.” He winked at me.

I remembered all the times he annoyed me. I guess he was like my littlish biggish brother.

“I’ll miss you to mi…?”

“Mi hermano.” He told me.

“I’ll miss you to mi hermano.”

Now Matthew walked up to me. “Why must the beautiful spring leave us for fall and then winter to come? It saddens me, but I’m glad to know that spring always returns.” I smiled and he gave me a hug.

Then he pulled away and bowed.

“Farewell thy fair lady.” He said to me sweetly.

“Farewell.” I said in return and bowed my head.

I mounted Aimi as Derron said his goodbyes.

“See you later Blade.” He said grabbing each others hand and then a hug.

“Hang tight amigo. Make sure this one stays out of trouble.” He winked at me.

“I think she’ll be the one keeping me out of trouble!” Derron said, and then walked to Matthew.

“Who’s going to help me watch this one?” Matthew pointed at Blade and gave Derron a hug.

“Hmm…Ask Elena.” Derron said smiling, Matthew blushed.

“Matthew and Elena sitting in a tree! K-I-S-S-I-N-G!” Blade sang. “Shut up!” Matthew scolded.

Derron laughed and mounted Aero.

“Oh! Were missing someone!” he said remembering we had almost forgotten Catherine.

“Not anymore.” Catherine said closing the door.

“You must be Iris, sorry I’m late.” She said, as she took out her horse and mounted.

“Do you have all of your things?”

“Yes.” She replied.

“Blade, Matthew, this is Catherine.” I introduced.

“Yes, we’ve met.” They replied and bowed there heads to her, as she did as well.

“Well, we should get going now.” She said.

“Goodbye my dear friends.” I said sadly.

“We’ll miss you too.” They replied, as we sped off towards the gate to get off castle grounds. Guards opened the gates to let us out, which led to the town. The only thing you could here in the streets during this hour was a couple chickens wandering and pecking about, and a few homeless moaning in there sleep in the alleys.

Otherwise, the whole town had a sleepy quiet effect. The air smelled a bit smoky from the blacksmith nearby. When passing by a certain building, the smell of baking bread in the oven lingered passed my nose, just that thought made me miss Richard.

I had never been out in the town before, I guess I didn’t care to, being that I had all of my needs and wants at the castle. Aimi happily trotted down the roads, full of energy.

Her head held high and proud. Aero’s head was also the same way, but his seemed stronger, more powerful. As we kept going through, I noticed that people were starting to open there windows. Whispers started to flow, and the whispers turned to regular talking which turned into cheering as we went down the roads.

Young women started to shout out at Derron, but he paid no attention. They all knew I was the Dragon Savior. It felt awkward getting attention, this had never happened to me before, so I just kept my head down in embarrassment. “Were at the city’s limit.” Derron told us, as we passed through another gate. This one was a little smaller than the castle gates. Now, the only thing was the dirt road straight ahead, with a forest on one side, and sleeping farms on the other. “Alright Catherine, what road are we taking?” Derron asked her.

She had stayed quiet the whole time. “Call me Cat.” She told us. “Okay, Cat. Tell us where were going.” He repeated.

“We need to get to the southwest road. That is where my village is, and that is in the direction of your first Dragon Rider. The Forest Dragon if I’m not mistaken.” She asked.

“Yes, that’s it.” I answered.

“Alright, so its three days away to the Neko village by horse. Unless we travel at night as well as day once, then it is one and a half days away.”

“Hmmm…Well we better start off at a gallop if we want to do this all in that much time. You can handle that right Aero?” His horse neighed in agreement, he laughed.

“Well, let’s go!” Derron was the first to gallop off, Catherine horse surprisingly could take the challenge and kept up with us. We kept at a gallop for quite a long time, but I told Derron we needed to start trotting. I didn’t want to wear the horses out this early in the journey. It was now past sunrise, and the sun warmed me up a bit, although it was still cold.

We now passed by travelers, farmers, and merchants on the way. I saw a little boy holding on to his mother’s hand, riding on a wagon once. His bright green eyes couldn’t hide under all the dirt on his face. He wiggled out of his mother’s grip and ran to me.

“Miss, are you the Dragon Savior?” how can people recognize me already? Rumors must have spread throughout the whole kingdom. I took off my hood and smiled at him.

“I prefer to be called Iris.” His eyes shined in wonderment.

“Wait till I tell my friends that I met the Dragon Savior!” he said, it made me laugh.

“Abraham lets go!” his mother called.

“If you wish, you can come visit us someday. We live in Danao, right next to Hidden Suichuu.” He said.

“Maybe someday. Now run along!” I told him.

“Abraham!” she called again.

“Coming mother!” he ran back to his mother.

We rode for hours and hours, only stopping for lunch break, and then getting back on the road. Before I knew it, it was already sunset. I felt frustrated because I didn’t know what I was getting myself into.

I looked down at my saddle, and Derron put his hand on my leg. “Something bothering you?” he asked me.

I sighed, gathering my thoughts together. “Derron, I don’t know what I’m getting myself into. I don’t know what’s going to happen, and if people will get hurt, or anything! I don’t know what lies ahead of me.” I said and looked down at my saddle again.

“You’ll be fine.” He comforted me.

“Don’t worry about the future, whatever comes, comes. Just be ready for it, don’t let anything catch you by surprise. Besides, its to late to turn back now.”

“Maybe…” I said contemplating.

“Nope, there is no turning back. You’re stuck with me.” He said and I smiled.

He always knew how to cheer me up. There was something in the pit of my stomach that always came when Derron smiled at me. Ignoring it was my way of handling it, but I still wondered what that feeling was. Oh well, just ignore it Iris. I told myself. It was time to focus on right now. And right now, it was dark, and time to set up camp. Tomorrow would be an all day and night ride.

Chapter 15

“Alright, Iris do you know how to set up a tent?” Derron asked me.

“I’m pretty sure.” I replied.

“Great, you’ll be setting up all three tents, I’ll gather some wood for a fire, and Cat will come help me.” Oh boy, setting up a tent wasn’t my forte, but I think I can handle it.

Catherine nodded, and followed Derron out into the darkness forest. We had set up camp in a small area in the forest where Derron said many travelers stopped for camp. I took off the tent supplies and started trying to figure them out.

“Hmmm..maybe this goes here.” I said aloud putting four stakes out onto the ground.

“Uh…Oh come on Iris! Dad took you out camping all the time! Now’s not the time to forget how to put a tent together!”

When Derron came back the first thing that came out of his mouth was a laugh. Even Catherine giggled.

“Need some help?” he asked.

I sighed. “Okay, so I forgot how.”

I crossed my arms. “It’s not like you can do any better.”

“That my friend, is when you under estimate me.”

He quickly put together one tent, without a problem.

“Whatever!” I laughed.

Then he taught me how to put together the other ones. The one thing I did know how to do was light the fire, of which Derron seemed to be having a problem with.

“Need some help?” I copied from what he had said to me about the tents.

Then he copied me. “Like you can do any better.”

“’That my friend is where you underestimate me.’” I quoted from him again and laughed. Then, I got the flint and quickly lit the camp fire without a problem. He laughed.

“And what would I do without you?” he said sweetly.

“We would all freeze without Iris.” Catherine laughed.

I was actually surprised that she even spoke. But now she was beginning to know us a little better, and spoke more often. We all gathered around the camp fire to warm ourselves, it was very cold out now. I wrapped my cloak around me tight to keep me warm, but even then I would be freezing without the fire.

“Now what?” I asked.

“Now, we can talk about what were going to do when Catherine leaves us.” Derron answered, and then took out a map from his pack.

“Right now we are right here.” Catherine started.

“If we keep on this road, it will lead straight to my village, but that is if we do a ride all day and night tomorrow. After that you have to visit the Forest Dragon first, he is the closest to my village. You can continue on Southwest Road until you get to the dead end. That’s where you have to travel through the forest without a road. It will be a challenge no doubt to find Hidden Shinrin. Thankfully there are markers that lead the way, but if you don’t have a compass they will be of no help. Either that or just know which direction is which, that will help if you lose your compass.” She finished. “Why is it going to be a challenge to find Hidden Shinrin if we have a compass?” I asked.

Cat looked at me funny, and Derron decided to explain.

“It’s called Hidden Shinrin for a reason. These ‘markers’ aren’t easy to find. You have to know what they look like before you know where to go. The forest is filled with twists and turns, you can easily get lost. The people who live there know that, and use it to their advantage when being under attack. The Hidden Shinrin is somewhere in the forest depths, it’s not going to be easy to find.” He turned to Catherine.

“Do you know what the markers are?”

“Unfortunately not, but I know someone who does. My village leader can tell you what they are, and how to identify them.” She replied.

“Alright, sounds good.” Derron replied.

“We’ll I got to get some sleep now. A cat’s got to rest you know.” She yawned and let out the strangest sound that I think was a purr, I raised an eyebrow but didn’t question her.

“Goodnight Iris, goodnight Derron.” She bowed and left into her tent.

I looked at Derron, then back at the tent. “Um…Did she-“

Derron interrupted. “Purr? Yeah, you know about the Neko tribe don’t you?” “What they’re a bunch of cats?” I said sarcastically and laughed.

Derron looked at me strangely. “Uh yeah.” He told me.

“You’re not serious. They what?! That’s crazy!” I said getting up and sitting next to him to hear the crazy story.

“The Neko Tribe is a bunch of people who think they are cats…weird right? Then again they people can’t help it if they are raised like that. I’ve heard rumors that some people have a tail and ears of a cat.” He whispered. “Okay, so they are a bunch of crazy people who think there cats.” I said kiddingly.

“They believe that there is more than one creature in the world, other than the Dragons. That’s why I guess…strange…” He said.

This was too weird for my taste. WAY to weird. To the point where I don’t think I will ever look at Catherine the same way ever again. We fell silent for a little time, listening to the night song of crickets chirp and owls hoot. “Iris?” Derron asked me.

“Yes?” I looked at him and he looked down.

“There’s something I’ve wanted to tell you…” he started.

“What is it?” I asked curiously.

“I-…uhh…well…I really…umm…” he stuttered.

“What?” I asked again, he looked up. His eyes shining from the light of the fire.

“I –“

“ Hey you guys, can you keep it down a bit? I can hear everything your saying!” Catherine called from her tent.“

“Um, I think we should be going to go to sleep now. It’s kind of late.” Derron said.

But somehow I knew that wasn’t really what he wanted to say.

“Goodnight Derron.” I bowed my head. He took my hand bowed and kissed it.

“Goodnight Iris.” He said.

We went our separate ways, I going into my tent, while Derron put out the fire. While I lay on my bed I heard Derron start to mumble to himself. I felt bad eavesdropping but couldn’t help but listen in. Turned out Zara was right, it was a bad trait.

“Ah Derron! Why can’t you just tell her!” his shadow paced around.

“You had a perfect chance, but you just lose it!” He stopped pacing, and started to walk over to my tent.

Immediately I pretended to sleep, but barely peeked with one eye to see what would happen. Then, he peered into my tent, just barely to most likely see if I was awake or not. But this time when looking at his eyes they had a new feeling, an intensity I couldn’t seem to name. He left and went into his tent. Now I wondered what was bothering him, that he wanted to get off his chest.

Maybe that unknown feeling that was in his eyes was the same one that was in the pit of my stomach. But what was it?

“Maybe he-“ I said quietly but stopped myself. Don’t even think about that Iris! How could anyone love you?! That’s preposterous! I had lost that feeling long ago when the woman I dared call my mother killed the only person I really loved, my father. Come to your senses! I repeated to myself and rolled over to my side. Exhaustion from not sleeping the night before and a long ride finally kicked in, and I fell into a surprisingly deep sleep.

The sun peered through the crack of my tent as the morning birds chirped there song. I got up moaning, for once I actually had a good night’s sleep. When opening my tent I squinted at the sun’s bright light.

“Good morning sunshine!” Derron called out.

Catherine was cooking breakfast. “Would you like to break your fast?” Cat laughed.

“It’s not as good as Richard’s food but it will do.” She said.

My stomach complained in agreement with Cat. I had just realized that I didn’t eat dinner last night, my mind was to occupied to think about food.

“I caught a couple fish this morning, and I found some blueberries, and bird eggs! Bon’ Appetite!” Derron said.

“Ah, Mr. Scavenger eh?” I said smiling.

Cat served herself but me first.

“What about you Derron? Aren’t you going to eat?” I asked him.

“Um, no I’m not hungry.”

“What? You didn’t eat last night!” I said surprised.

“Well, you know those bird eggs?” he asked me.

“Yeah, taste great by the way.” I replied taking a big bite of food. “Well…there mom tasted great too.” he said burping, but excusing himself. Me and Cat laughed our heads off, and he joined in too. After breakfast we picked up our tents and packed up the horses, of course making sure they had their share of food. Then we were back on the road. After a while, everything just seemed to blend in, everything felt the same and looked the same.

There were very few travelers who passed by, and more and more forest on the way. Cat said we were getting closer to SeraiKingdom. Which made sense being that NekoVillage was pretty much on the border line of Samara and Serai. Hours seemed to pass by like days; it reminded me of where everything seemed to start, in the basement. Where everything seemed to pass by just the same way. Except for the part where my fate was supposed to be the gallows or guillotine.

We stopped for lunch, this time it was quick since we wanted to get there tonight. That wasn’t going to be easy.

“Okay, so the main problem you are going to face is the bandits who live throughout the forest, and the guardians who lookout for Hidden Shinrin.” Cat told us, it was just about dark.

“Let’s take a dinner break.” Derron said pulling Aero to a halt.

We sat off to the side of the road and unloaded a pack with food. We didn’t make a fire this time, I ate a dried biscuit and some salted meat. Since we wanted to get there sometime tonight we would have to keep going for a long time.

“We’ll probably be there at twelve o’ clock tonight.” He said as we chowed down quickly.

“I suggest that we start off at a gallop and then slow down a bit later. We want to save as much time as possible.” I told them.

“Sounds like a plan. Let’s get back on the road.” Cat said, we cleaned up and hopped back on the horses that got a short grazing break.

We started at a gallop, the road lit by the moonlight. It was getting colder and colder as we went along, I eventually had to put my hood over my head to keep myself from freezing. We slowed down to a fast trot, and for hours and hours it went on. There were now no travelers riding past, not a noise but the occasional owl. My thighs now hurt from riding so long, and I felt as if I were going to fall out of my saddle. Everything looked the same in the dark, it felt as if we were walking in place all this time. I began to wonder when we would get there or if we were even close to getting there. In all my exhaustion, I started to get a weird feeling. As if we were being watched.

Then I heard a twig snap, immediately I turned around but there was nothing there. I continued on, but then I heard some bushes rustle, I turned to my side to see bright yellow eyes staring straight at me, immediately I gasped and pulled Aimi to a halt.

“What’s wrong?” Derron asked me.

I blinked and the eyes were gone.

“Nothing.” I replied, beginning to think that I was hallucinating from being so exhausted.

I tried getting my mind off of it but I still felt like we were being followed. Constantly I would turn to see a figure lurking around, or hear a growl from the back of me to the point where I was beginning to panic feeling tension rise to my throat. Suddenly I felt something tackle me off my horse. Aimi screeched in terror as I felt the creature bite my shoulder drawing blood. I yelled out and tried reaching for my dagger on my thigh.

The animal howled up in victory when suddenly it fell off of me. Derron had punched its side. When getting up, I looked to see the bright yellow eyes of a large grey wolf. It grinded his teeth and growled at Derron who drew his sword. I drew my dagger from my thigh as the animal charged full speed at me. He tried jumping me again seeing that I was weak, but I turned to the side and cut the animal on its back.

It wailed but then tried attacking Derron, he tried to bite his legs but Derron avoided every attack, Cat got out her rod and hit the wolf on his rib. He whined in response, and then gave up. What he thought was going to be an easy meal wasn’t so easy. He showed his teeth again, turned around and left. Derron put his sword away and ran to me.

“Are you alright? Iris I’m so sorry I didn’t-” he said but I interrupted.

“Don’t apologize, I should have told you guys that I had seen the wolf before it attacked us. I’ll be alright to ride.” I reassured him.

“He took one nasty bite, your bleeding like crazy.” He ran to Aero and grabbed some wrap.

“Ouch!” I cried out as he wrapped my shoulder up.

“Hold still!” he said.

“There, that should help stop the bleeding until we get there.” He said, and then helped me up Aimi.

“Thank you, Derron.” I said sweetly.

“I don’t think we’ll get any more interruptions after that one. We should be okay now. Were almost there anyway, and no wolves dare enter into NekoTerritory.” Cat said and we were off again.

Chapter 16

What will happen to Iris now that she’s on her own? Is she going to make it alive to gain the blessing of the Dragons and there talismans? Find out in the next book, The Dragon Savior: Mystery of the Forest Dragon, continuing the Dragon Savior series.

shrugged. It took hours and hours to get through our shopping done. It was mostly Derron’s fault because he kept stopping at the desert tables. When we finally finished, it was 3 p.m. and I ended up crashing on my bed. Unfortunately it didn’t last longer than ten minutes, a knock on the door. I sighed and opened the door, to see a messenger. “News for you Dragon Savior, you are to meet with the Chief immediately. Please follow me.” I nodded and followed him. We walked out of the guest house and went to the palace. Two guards stood at the entrance, “Sanji gen vic.” The messenger said to the guards. “Welmec.” The guards familiarly said. We entered into the throne room were Sanji sat, and Derron also waited. I curtsied politely, of course he looked like the ‘Loopy’ in my dream, excluding the cat ears and tail. “Dragon Savior, as I said yesterday, you are welcome and always will be in my humble village. I trust that my little sister Shanti has shown you good hospitality.” He asked me. “Yes, thank you for everything Chief Sanji.” I rose. “I wish that you could stay longer, but unfortunately, dark forces are rushing you out. You must leave at once, with you friend Derron.” He said. “Chief, Catherine has told us that you know the markers that lead into Hidden Shinrin. Can you please enlighten us?” Derron asked humbly, as if he was talking to the King. “Yes, I have been to Hidden Shinrin once. I believe that the hidden markers that you seek, is the Forest Dragon symbol.” He gestured to the messenger who brought a picture to him. “Here, keep this. This is what the symbol looks like. They are actually tattoos on the Forest Dragon Guardians.” He handed me the paper. I examined it. It was a fierce green dragon. “Thank you.” I said in return. “Now, you must go. I have enjoyed your company. Your horses have already been packed with your necessities.” I glanced at Derron who smiled nervously. “Thank you for you hospitality.” I bowed and Derron and I left. “Cat, are we there yet?” I asked, “My shoulder is killing me!” “We should be approaching the village gates in a couple minutes. It’s probably midnight right now.” She replied and I slumped in my saddle. Well, at least it was good to know that we would be there soon. In the distance I started to see the wall of NekoVillage approaching. “Haha! We made it in two days! Race you guys there!” Derron said and charged off. Aero and Aimi were neck in neck to each other which is when Derron glanced at me, winked and sent Aero in turbo mode. Cat now followed close behind me with her horse, and Derron ended up winning the race. “I was so close!” I told him. “Kenshiyo! Ro meginshi?!” A voice called from above. Then I saw a figure on top of the village walls, a night guard no doubt. “Etsu Catherine beyu stevas, Dragon Vioras Iris yi tainca Derron!” Catherine called out to the guard. After a couple minutes the gates started to lift up. Now, me and Derron followed Catherine inside. The whole village was sleeping, as we approached the biggest house out of all of them. Then I saw two guards standing by the double doors. “Catherine Nekuyo.” Catherine told her name to the guards. “Welmec.” They both said at the same time and opened the door. As we went inside I glanced back at the guards. My eyes widened, when I saw that the guards looked like they had tails! I blinked and they were gone, maybe it was sheer exhaustion. When entering the double doors shut, and I noticed we were now in a throne room. On top of the throne was a man. He had black hair with violet eyes and wore no shirt, but tattoos on his arms. He was very muscular and had a strong look to him. I almost gaped when I saw that he had ears and a tail! I looked over to Derron who had the same look on his face. Looks like his little tale was true. I thought to myself. “Lo Nesoot.” Catherine bowed and her own ears and tail appeared. Okay, this is…creepy. I and Derron also bowed. “Hello Iris, I am glad to have you at my home. I am Prince Loopy.” I started to giggle. “What are you laughing at?!” he asked me strongly. “Oh nothing, its just that your name…” I started giggling again. “What about his name Iris? You should respect the royal prince over crazy cat land!” Derron told me with a serious face. “Your friend is right, respect!” Loopy said. Then suddenly Derron suddenly a poof noise came from Derron’s direction, and suddenly he was wearing a pink dress. “What the?!” I said aloud and then started cracking up. “What are you wearing Derron?!” and laughed some more. “Now, now Iris! That is no way to talk to your escort!” He said in a girly proper voice which made me laugh even more. In the background you could see Catherine chasing her tail and a male cat/person with one blue eye and one green eye fighting over a yarn ball with a female orange cat/person with violet eyes. “Okay…” I said. “Iris! Stand up! And do not talk to Loopy like that!” I started rolling on the floor with laughter. “Iris? Iris what is a matter with you!” My eyes began to open. “Why are you laughing?” Derron asked me. I got up and saw that we were inside a guest room. “Derron, please don’t tell me another crazy story like the cat one again!” he raised an eyebrow. “I just had the craziest dream! That the NekoVillage leader was a cat! And Catherine was too! And then you wore a-“ I stopped myself and started cracking up. “A what?” he asked. “A pink dress!” I laughed some more. “And the village leader’s name was Loopy! And Shanti and Tommy were cats to! And they were fighting over a yarn ball! And Catherine started chasing her tail!” I kept rambling on. Then Derron started to laugh. “You’re right, I’m never telling you a crazy myth again!” he laughed some more. “Although that would make a good story…just exclude me wearing a pink dress…” he said embarrassed. We had made it into NekoVillage the night before, and the first thing we did was meet the Village Leader Sanji, who welcomed us into his Territory. He introduced his little sister Shanti and her friend Tommy to us who were good friends with Catherine. We were to have another meeting with him today. And today wasn’t going to be fun. We had to restock our food supply and other necessities, meet with Sanji, pack up, and head out into the Forest by ourselves. “Alright sleepyhead, its already 8 a.m. Time to get moving.” Derron helped me up. “Okay, were our clothes washed?” I asked him. “Yes they were, just make sure you take a bath before putting them on! You stink! Oh, and Sanji ordered that you go to the doctor to have a look at your shoulder and get it properly wrapped.” “Oh! Totally forgot about that.” “How could you forget about your swollen bloody shoulder?” he asked raising an eyebrow. “Uhh…I dunno.” I honestly said. “Weirdo.” He laughed and left the room. I went to a little bathroom in the guest room and took a nice, hot, soothing, fragrant bath. I had to take the time to wash and brush my hair, who knew how much longer it would be before I would take another one. Then I put on the clean clothes that were given to me and made the bed, and the door knocked. “Who is it?” I called. “It’s Catherine and Shanti!” They both called. “Come in.” I told them, and they both walked in. “My brother ordered that you follow us to our physician.” Shanti said politely and led the way. “How does it feel?” Catherine asked. “Sore.” I told her. She led us into a white room with beds for patients. Then I saw a man with of course Neko clothing on, but more covered, probably to keep as sterile as possible. “Etsu Iris, neq kesp Neko.” Shanti told the doctor, he nodded and came to me. “Welcome, Iris of Samara, great Dragon Savior. I understand you have a wound. Come, sit down.” He directed me towards one of the beds, and I sat down. “I’m going to have to unravel this, it may hurt a little.” He said and took out some scissors to cut the wrap. He gently cut the wrap and started to undo it. “Goodness, we better take care of this before it gets infected.” He grabbed a bottle and took a rag, then he poured some of the liquid on it and began to dab my shoulder. I cringed in surprise, this hurt more than when he unwrapped it. “Oh, should have warned you it stings. Sorry.” He apologized. “What exactly happened here?” he asked me trying to take my mind off the pain. “I was attacked by a wolf, and it took quite a nasty bite into my shoulder.” I said cringing again. “I can see the puncture marks from his teeth, that must have been painful.” He said imagining. “Trust me; it felt like the wolf threw daggers into it.” I told him, and he winced at the thought. My wound now wasn’t covered in blood, but all you saw now was several punctured deep holes in my skin. “We’ll have to put stitches on them otherwise they can more easily get infected and scars will be less noticeable. “Is that going to hurt?” I asked him. “Not as long as I numb the pain it shouldn’t be too bad. But you might not want to look while I’m doing it.” he said and pulled out some tools and wire. All this time Shanti and Catherine were waiting patiently in a couple of chairs in the corner. The doctor then gave me a shot and I suddenly couldn’t feel my arm or shoulder, great. “Okay, so when you said numb, you meant that it feels like my arms going to fall off?” he laughed. “Yes, that’s what I meant. I’ve been around it so long I forget that other people don’t know what it feels like. Alright, now turn in the other direction while I stitch it up.” I listened and turned. All I could really feel is a pinch here and a pinch there. But nothing major. “There, all done. Now all we have to do is wrap it to make sure nothing snags the stitches and it also helps to keep it from getting infected as well. But not just that but it also sooths the pain away. Great huh?” He took some medical wrap and took care of my shoulder. It now felt a lot better, and it was great to get rid of that sticky feeling. “Alright you are free to go now.” He said and then I thanked him. “You’re friend Derron told us to meet him at the marketplace.” Shanti said, and we headed out of the guest house. “He said to meet him at the town square.” Catherine told us as we walked through the market. “Fresh fish!” a raspy stinky man called out. “Get your fresh fish!” he said with a fish in his hand waving it around. “Roses and flowers for a pretty lady!” Another called out. Then there were some stands that spoke the Neko language and others who spoke English. There were children running about playing tag and what not. It was your typical market place. We made it to the plaza where Derron was waiting. “There you are! Looks like your shoulder was taken care of.” He examines it. “And obviously a better job than I could ever do!” he laughed. “Alright, Sanji said that he wanted to take care of food for us, which is great. But we need to take care of other supplies. Here I have a list.” He pulled out a sheet of paper. “If you get an accident like that again, I’d like to get something that is easy to do and can keep a wound from getting infected. We also need some stakes for our tents; they must have gotten knocked off when you did from that wolf.” The list went on and on, on what we needed before we left. And to top it off, we needed to meet with the leader before we left. “Alright, alright! I get it we need a ton of stuff! I’m not sure the horses can carry all that!” I laughed. “Oh they will manage! Even if I have to carry some of it! These are all necessities!” I snatched the list from him. “Give that back!” he said trying to grab it back but I blocked him. “Uh huh, because cookies are a necessity.” I smirked. “Okay so excluding that one.” He laughed nervously and stole it back. “Hey guys!” Tommy called out. “Hey! What are you doing here?!” Shanti looked at him. “What? Can’t a guy hang out with his friends, and see the Dragon Savior?” he crossed his arms. “Whatever, you’re supposed to be watching Cat’s little brother!” she yelled at him. “Relax, I got it covered!” he said leaning against a wall. “Yeah right, who did you get?” she asked sarcastically. “Jed.” “Jed! You got Jed?! The most irresponsible brat in all of Sankari?!” Shanti yelled. “He said he wanted to impress you, or show you that he is responsible.” Tommy smirked. “Ah! That makes me sick! He knows I don’t like him!” She shivers. “Just the thought makes me sick.” Tommy shrugged. END OF BOOK ONE

Sankari's History

Sankari was found by four people and their followers. The first was Samara Romero. The second was, Serai Leonard, followed by

Yulara Rios, Comoros Shield and Danao Lorenz. During this time the dragons were but eggs waiting to hatch. Samara claimed her land and the people named it after her, making it the land of Samara, and after finding the Silver Dragon’s egg, she named the capital Shiruba in honor of the Silver Dragon who helped her gain wisdom throughout the years. After finding the first egg, it became destiny for the other four leaders to find the dragon eggs. Samara was known as a great queen throughout her whole life. Serai Leonard found his dragon in the wooded forest, and thus claimed his land there. We all know this dragon as the Forest dragon. And as all the peoples did, named their land after their leader. Serai was known as a ruler that gives people a little more freedom although he did not let anything unjust happen. Yulara had her share of land as well and not to anyone’s surprise, found the next dragon egg that was the Fire dragon. She was a powerful ruler and made wise and some foolish decisions. At the beginning of her rule, she wasn’t the most wise queen, and although very beautiful and calm looking, couldn’t control her temper. The next was Danao Lorenz who was also very foolish ruler. But he found the next dragon that was the water dragon. And lastly, Comoros Shield found the Black dragon. The black dragon needs control and a rider stronger in will power than it is. Otherwise, he could use the rider to his own advantage, and he did. A war broke out between Yulara and Danao about who was the greatest. And although their dragons tried to talk them out of the foolishness, they did not yield. And so both dragons were forced to participate in such shamefulness. (Both Yulara Rios and Danao Lorenz had children. Yulara’s daughter Asana and Danao’s son Cairo have a good possibility of appearing in a new book after this one.) While they were at war, the Dark Dragon saw fit to take advantage of it. He would send his goons sometimes undercover to look for each kingdom’s weak spots, knowing that the silver dragon was always watching, he wouldn’t dare try to take over that kingdom yet. But, if his plans went right, and he took over those two, he would have enough power to take over the other ones. His goal was to first steal the dragons and their riders and then go and harness their power to create the Final Dragon. But of course, that is when the Silver Dragon heard of his plans as he always does, and sent for the one called The Dragon Savior who was surprisingly not Samara the original dragon rider of the Silver Dragon. That was when Adalia Marquez came forward as The Dragon Savior.  She had slain the dragon rider who’s heart became pure with evil thoughts and that was when the war came to a stop, and The Serenity came upon the land. But the Silver Dragon made a prophecy, and sang these exact words:

Though this evil has ended,

And the serenity came upon us,

I give a warning to thy kin

That you may keep watch

For the time will come again

Where the evils locked up

Will escape and lurk in the shadows

And will wait for the right time

To return and take over the throne

I will not let this happen,
